yes. it's true. i'm a newbie through and through. inherited my 1st Nikon after my spouse passed away. didn't know what i was doing. always just shooting on auto. through years, found out i LOVED taking photos. have the passion but not the performance. just (i do mean JUST) learning my camera and trying to get off auto. took a basic photography class which helped some, but mostly had my head swirling. i travel quite extensively, but in groups and on a 'schedule', so i don't have luxury there of "practicing" what settings do what. i am getting out locally and trying to experiment. mostly, birding. i love the bigger animals pics, landscapes and kid's photos. currently, i'm taking pictures at our church events. i NEED to get a better understanding of action shots in low lighting, so that's what i'm concentrating on. i'm hoping this website and/or forum is the place to learn. i don't mind 'constructive' criticism at all. i'd like to produce photos of "whoa" value and not just "oh, that's nice". i'm excited about the wealth of information here and the gorgeous photos i've seen. Whoa.

kajunkid,
Sorry for your loss. I know the best advice someone gave me after a loss was to stay busy and occupied. Well you've definitely chosen a hobby that will take care of that. Between getting your perfect shot and post processing, if need be, you'll most likely feel some comfort knowing this was something your husband enjoyed doing also. Remember, practice, practice, practice is the best way to achieve your goal of getting off manual. I'm sure you'll do just fine.
You'll see there are many helpful people her on the Hog. There's also a great search feature at the very top of the page, on the right hand side, which might be able to find answers to basic questions you might have. However you decide to look for answer to you needs is fine, we're here to help.
Good luck and happy shooting. I'm sure I'll see you around the forum.

Sorry for your loss. Welcome to our forum.
Welcome to the club. So sorry about your loss.
You will find a lot of great information by club members.
My only advice on your new road is to practice, practice and practice some more. I have been shooting for over 40 years and I still practice learning my camera.
I am a Nikon shooter too.
Again welcome.
My heart felt condolences for your loss. Welcome to the club, don't worry about the learning curve, photography is an on going learning process. Just relax, slow down take it all in and enjoy yourself.
Welcome to a bold new world my friend, I started about 25 years ago with film obviously but sometimes its hard to keep the passion alive and seeing posts like yours makes my passion reignite, thanks for that
Welcome to the Hog KajunKid, enjoy.
Welcome to the forum. As you well know by now, digital is much easier to learn than film. I take tons of pics. I have taken about a hundred pics of the TV in my computer room ... trying different settings, different ways to aim a flash ... different ISO settings ... fun to learn.
Out of about five thousand shots with my Nikon I saved about two hundred ... like someone has said take pictures of everything and learn how your camera works ... try manual, shutter and aperture priority to find what you like. It is a hobby, have fun with it. You have a great camera.
