I agree with Trix. I like my Yongnuo but only use it once in a while. For heavy or pro use go with Nikon.

The YN685s with YN622tx trigger that I have are great.

I recently got a D500 and am thinking about a flash for it . . . Am considering the nikon sb700, but was wondering if one of the other brands such as Yongnuo would have the exact same capabilities but at a cheaper price. I am sure the Nikon flash will be good, but if another cheaper flash works exactly the same . . . Then I might go that way. Mostly will be used for interior snapshots during family get-to-gethers and as fill flash for outdoors. Not into portraits, but do a lot of outdoor animals/birds and landscapes. Any suggestions are appreciated . . .

Check out Nissin. Tiny, powerful, configurable, swivelable, tiltable. I have two of them. Love 'em.

Let you know in a week or so. Rumor has it my new (but older model) Yongnuo EX 568 ll may be a fathers day gift. Everything a Canon 580 EXll does for under a $100. That said my 430 EX ll remains flawless after purchasing used a few years ago. Just need more power. For the intended purposes stated you do not need the latest and greatest model. The 568 is made for Nikon as well. Last time I looked - best price was $93 with free shipping from a few vendors. Definitely worth researching.

If you're really, really, serious about flash photography I would go with the Nikons. But if you're just want to try it out I suggest going online and read the Strobist blog. It's one of the best blog for flash photography.

Nikon (SB910), Phottix or Yongnuo. They all work.

For occasional use, nearly any flash will be fine. If you do weddings and events, then there is no excuse for not using Quantum - easily the best, heavy duty usage, constant duty portable flash. Blows away Nikon's best in a heartbeat. All you need is for the Nikon to overheat and cut out until it cools down just once, and you will never want to use it again. It happened to me with an SB800 - never again. I read that the SB900 is just as bad.

A few months ago I purchased a pair of Yongnuo YN685's and a YN622. So far they work great and the cost was far less than the Canon Speedlite flashes. I'm very happy with the 685's.

Uh Oh! No excuse? I'm in trouble! Been doing weddings over 30 years, and I don't use Quantum. Don't tell anyone!
