Some of you may have seen a previous post from me about the photo session I would be doing with our soon to be niece at the U of A. I posted several photos from then on a thread titled 'OK, so I think I need a little more practice'. Looked thru the other photos and saw this one and thought I'd put it up. She and our nephew(the groom) grad. this past Dec. and are currently in Atlanta due to a job he got out of school. She had several places picked for the photos, one of them here. He proposed to her on the 'Walk of Fame' which is behind her, a photo was done there also.

I see what you are saying. It is a big place. This is more for nostalgia.

No problem, as I commented under that post it was for nostalgic reasons and yes she seems lost in the photo. It was a fly by the moment photo. But as a thought, what do you think would have helped the photo?

Donrent is right - I don't really see her, just the building.

What about a profile shot of her standing in front of the flowers with her in the right of the frame. The composition would be angles such that the words "Bryant Denny Stadium" on the left leading away from the viewer where perhaps "Denny" is in focus but the other two words are OOF but enough that you can make out what it says?

I'd imagine the shot taken from her left side slightly angled towards the stadium name with her turning her head to the left a little.

Thanks Tim. Appreciate you giving me some pointers. I know the shot is not much to look at. Been thinking about it since I first posted it. Can see now where I could have made it better first by having her away from the sign, however I would have had her standing in the road on Univ. Blvd. so not a good idea. I was across the road using an 18-105mm lens. We were headed back to the car and she had already crossed the street so I told her to go stand in front of the sign. Again a lesson learned. :-D

Well it's certainly better than no picture! Perhaps if you had walked to the right to get her in the left part of the frame and the stadium in the right? Before you press the shutter, ask yourself if it is clear what the subject is from what you see in the viewfinder. If you find your eye wandering around then recompose until you nail it. Work the shot. Sometimes it's not practical and this maybe been one of those occasions. You have to decide whether to take the shot or not. Unless you're using film, you just eat up a little bit of memory on your card (and a small amount of wear and tear).

Now that's school pride!! Great photo. My Dad played football at Michigan (lookin' forward to September 1st at Cowboy Stadium!) in the late '30s. When one his friends from college days passed away, he was cremated and his ashes sprinkled at Michigan Stadium. Go Blue!!

For me, this is a good mood and location identifier photo. Then it should be followed up with the closer pictures that show more of her and less of the background. I can see a whole series of picture around this location with this the 'opening' shot that leads into the more intimate detail shots where she dominates the pictures.

Good point, wahawk. What doesn't work for me is the photo doesn't feel properly weighted. The entire background is centered around the stadium - that's dead center and symmetric (ignoring the correctable tilt). You have this really nice buildIng framed front and center. Now, you have a lovely bride off to the side that seems to be competing with the building. Again, to me, it doesn't work because of how it is composed. Perhaps some negative space would've helped me a bit.

I think a shot with just the front of the stadium and then a shot with most of her and enough of the building so that you know what it is would've been better. Or...perhaps if she was centered in front of the doors then the eye would be attracted to her and the building would just be a conduit to lead the eye instead of being just another subject. She would've fit in with the whole composition better. Or perhaps her standing on the brick ledge laughing or looking down at the flowers? Again - centered with the building? I tend to find that the rule of thirds works well mostly when you really know what the subject is.

But everybody has different tastes and I could be off in left field on this one.

You don't get it. The stadium was the whole idea. The whole idea is irony, that on the most important day in her life, the bride is still thinking Crimson Tide! It's a statement photo. You've got to be a die hard college football fan to understand. I get it. I wanted to get members of the Michigan band to come and play The Victors and the Michigan school song after Dad's funeral at the graveside, but didn't make the connection. It would have been awesome, though!!
