Spam has to be about 80 years old. I remember talking to World War 2 Navy Veterans in 2015, and they said they ate so much of Spam, they refused to eat it after the war was over.

In Vietnam in 66-69 when I worked the night shift at the Tac Ops Center the mess hall had it in 10 lb cans, square with rounded corners just the size of a slice of bread and about 1 ft long. The first three months I had to go over and make the sandwiches myself for our office. Then one night the Colonel dropped in about 2 AM during an alert and saw us all eating Spam sandwiches and asked why we didn't go to the mess hall for a hot meal. We told him, two days later there was a night shift at the mess hall that made hot food. We could still have the sandwiches if we wanted and the men on guard could now drop in for cold drinks, coffee and Spam sandwiches. When I pulled commander of the relief I would give each of my guards 10 minutes in the middle of their shift to run to the latrine and pick up coffee and/or a sandwich. I stood their post. The rest of the time I kept on a constant patrol from post to post and only checked in the company ready room once an hour to get any news and report conditions on the perimeter. When the HQ found out about that the word went out for the other jr NCOs to do the same. And the Sgt of the Guard and OIC got told to make at least one circuit per shift. I wasn't real popular about that but nothing happened because my boss in the Tac Ops was a Colonel and he approved of it, so did the Command Sgt Major and the 1st Sgt. In fact it led to me being made acting Platoon Leader for a day twice when the Lt and all the Sr NCOs were absent. A Spc 5 platoon leader when there were a couple of three stripes and one acting Staff Sgt in the platoon. When they complained they were referred by the 1st Sgt to the CO who basically told them to like it or not but that was the was it was.
Guess I was a trouble maker.
Oh yeah, I actually like Spam and have a bunch of recipes for it.

Looks like Spam has a reputation for feeding military during any war the US is engaged in. Next time I see a young soldier or sailor, I will ask them. Does the mess hall serve you men Spam?

Near the Hormel company HQ in Austin, Minnesota. It started as a company museum then moved to another location, got much bigger and changed names.
