Fellow photog tells me the NIK package of B&W presets, especially Silver EFex no longer usable on current LR 5 or newer versions. Google supposedly dropping the NIK? Any truth to this or is it scuttlebutt?

I use NIK with Lightroom 5.7 without any problems, but it is true that Google has stopped supporting and developing NIK. I'm not sure how it plays with the latest versions of the Mac OS but at some point Adobe/Apple are going to do away with a certain system call that NIK uses and that's when it's dead. I'm currently running 10.10 and it works just fine, but I know I'm pretty far behind the OS curve at this point.

After being forced to buy a new machine running macOS Sierra version 10.12.4 I downloaded the NIK package since I had become very fond of the software on the older computer. I have not done an extensive review but everything seems to be working well. Silver Efex is one of the first I looked at since I like to convert to BW and it seemed fine.... hopefully I won't need any support as long as things are running well. I don't really know what the official word is on continuing support.

I just upgraded to a new PC, I reinstalled my Lr 5.7 and downloaded the NIK suite. Everything is functioning as it should.

Based on my experience all NIK modules work fine with current versions of macOS Sierra, Windows 10 Creator, Lightroom and Photoshop CC.

I run PS under Mac Sierra and have no problems with any on the NIK plug ins.

So far.

Things seem to work now, but what is sure is that future operating system changes might deep six the NIK software. Best to learn workarounds.

Google no longer develops or supports the NIK plug-ins. However, the final version still works with the latest updates of Photoshop and Lightroom on the latest Mac operating system (Sierra). Whether it will work under the upcoming High Sierra is unknown, as that OS is not yet finished.

NIK plug-ins are known as "abandonware." They will continue to work so long as their surrounding environment (application and operating system) contains the necessary support structures.

Of course, many folks maintain older computers and keep older versions of the OS on them, just so they can use older software...
