I agree, especially going manual when I want to check on exposures and focus.

I prefer to get my exposures close to avoid pushing too much in post so yes I am chimping chump. Just sign me up for Chimping Anonymous!

It doesn't matter to me. I have a Sony a99ii so I see everything I need in the EVF before I press the button as do all using mirrorless. However, I also shot film for 20 years where the was no chimping and with I little practice, getting a proper exposure was fairly easy.

It may be a bad habit, but I find myself constantly chomping. Call it insecurity, uncontrollable curiosity or whatever, but I like to make sure I have captured my subject.

Agree.
You don't have to do it all the time, but since you have the ability to verify that you got the shot the way you want, why not use it.

Most of the time these days I'm somewhere other than home taking photos for lunch money so it would be foolish not to chimp every shot, at least a little bit. To my mind it's kinda silly to go to all the trouble to compose the shot and not be SURE you got it..

I turned off instant review on my cameras but do bring up an image from time to time to check for exposure and ISO.

Why would any photographer who has the opportunity forego chimping?

Mostly never needed with an EVF - at least for exposure determination- when shooting JPEG.

I only use it after high speed bursts because curious to see what I got...but never in the heat of the moment.

If you do NOT have an EVF, and you have the TIME, chimping BEFORE the actual subject shooting and in the same lighting for exposure is highly recommended - but all this does take time and takes your attention away from the subject !

Why is it considered a bad habit? What is the downside? Should one feel guilt at some level for doing it?

I agree. Its just another tool that wasn't available with film.

With my cameras that have good EVFs, what you see is what you get. So there is really not much need to chimp.
I will occasionally chimp when using my cameras that have OVFs. But not after shooting each image.
That's just the way I shoot, others have their own way of doing things. Whatever works for you.

will
