Lots of people buy PRIME lenses which are a lot clearer, and more expensive. Kit lenses do a good job, but most are also Telephoto, and I guess you loose some sharpness there. I'm a poor man, just cheap lenses in my bag. I think you can do a pretty good job with them.

Thanks, the yellow jacket was taken with my 18-55 kit lens, I was surprised how well it came out, and of course I love taking pictures of flowers.

I have heard prime lenses also - that isn't a brand though - it is a lens made for a specific purpose right? Like macro or something - I dunno so excuse my seemingly stupid questions. And thanks for taking the time to answer.

Generally when someone refers to a PRIME lens they are referring to a NON-zoom lens, such as a 50mm or 300mm and not a 50-300mm. Therefore the only 'moving' mechanism in the lens is for the diaphram (aperture opening) or focusing. These are generally considered to be 'sharper' and 'better' than the zoom lens category that adds a movement that involves moving the glass or plastic lenses forward and back to change the focal length.

Welcome to Day 169:) Today we are going to be taking a look at Shallow Depth of Field. Shallow depth of field for anybody that doesn't understand ... simply means one part of the photo will be in focus and the rest will be blurry. There are several ways to accomplish this .. you can get the subject as close to the camera as possible...or you can make sure the subject is pretty far away from anything in the background.. or you can use a large aperture (smaller f/stop number) .. or you can use a longer focal length. Either of these will result in a shallow depth of field.
Here are a few examples to get us started .. I look forward to seeing what y'all come up with.

Y'all have to forgive me this is one of my favorite subjects so I have too many examples LOL

Here's a few I did for my photography class when we studied DOF and getting it as shallow as possible.

that crystal looks like a hard subject but you did it well

Thanks...the hardest part is telling when you're looking at real crystal and not a reflection. :)
