My first Iris with black back background.
I have had my Nikon d750 with the 24-120 lens for about 2 weeks, give or take, and am a real newbie. I saw this technique in yesterdays flowers here. I went on youtube to see how it was done. It is totally overcast and rainy. I went out between rain showers. I hand held the camera at 1/20, f4 iso 100 zoom 120. The flower was under exposed but the background was pretty much black. In Capture NX-D I lightened the flower and brushed out two small spots that were not black enough in the background. I am so excited with the results. People said I should return the camera for a d7200 since this is my first camera and I am totally inexperienced. I disagree.
I also used spot metering.
That's pretty good to handheld at 1/20. I'd have used a smaller arpiture for deeper focus. A monopod is a good choice for things like this and you can use smaller arpeture. Looks great to me! Congrats, you have an eye!
Your flower is lovely. Why would anyone want you to take the camera back and get another, any other? Your camera is a great model, the lens is a great choice and obviously you do well with the combination.

Great capture. Yes, the exposure could be better or PP'd more perhaps. But for a first try, "bravo!"
Change cameras, why? You already paid for a FX D750, why downside to a DX D7200? Both good cameras, but...
... you are doing fine now.
I personally thing people are too focused on equipment and not on the result. When you show this GREAT photo, who cares what ??? you used to produce it. Let's remember, the picture is the only thing that matters. Great job, and don't worry, you will learn to use the D750.
you are a rock at 1/20 hand held.

.....very nice .... U R doing well.... 1/20th hand held... wow!..... want the download.
I am not sure why I should have bought a lesser camera. Perhaps of my total inexperience and it is way too much camera. I am 68 trying to recover from stage 4 cancer, 6 months out. I may not have time to progress through different levels of camera equipment. Bottom line, this is what I want. Any way this new experience is so exciring.

I agree with you about buying the camera you want rather than a so called beginner camera that many people suggest to new users. I have been into photography for about 60 years now and have always bought professional grade cameras. I recommend that people buy what they can afford and think they will use. If you have money and want to have a nice camera then why buy a beginner style camera such as the Nikon D3300 and then when you learn to use it, go out and buy a D7200 or D810. If you have the money AND will take photos then why not start off with the D810. Most cameras have the same features with the professional cameras having better weather sealing, better quality materials and build. They basically have some type of auto or program system along with shutter or aperture priority system and manual with which to take photographs.
I think you did well with your choice of cameras and lens.
I am sorry about the cancer and offer you my prayers and best wishes,
Dennis
Nice start. Buy and use what you like. If you like it, you will use it.

Welcome to the forum. If this is your first camera, I'd say keep it. You have a right to be excited about this shot. I'll look forward to seeing more.
Nice photo of my favorite flower.
