Canon 7D II changing card recording on

I have had this happen a couple of times and I can't figure out why. Wondering if anyone else has had this happen and maybe know what's going on.

I have both a CF and SD card installed. I always have it set to record on Card 1 (CF) and in Standard mode, which simply means it will record to whichever card I've selected. (and before you ask - both cards have plenty of space available - nowhere near full).

What has happened a couple times is, I'll go out on a shoot thinking I'm recording on the CF card because I'm certain that's where I had it set last time and I've NO gone in and changed it. I come home, pop out the CF card and stick it in the iMac to load the pics via Lightroom and .... the pictures are not on the CF card! I find they have been recorded on SD the card instead!

This has happened a couple of times and I'm positive I di not go into the menu and change it from Card 1 to Card 2 - but that's what seems to be happening.

Could this be a bug in my 7D2 or maybe I'm doing something that's causing it to switch that I'm not aware of? Yes I know I could check the card selected each time, and I will from now on, but I still would love to know how/why it has switched from Card 1 to 2 without me going in and making a change?

I have the 7D not the 7DMII so I only have a slot for a CF card, But I was thinking that maybe it defaults back to the SD card each time you turn it on.

When I tested it that doesn't seem to be the case, but good thought

What happens is if you open the card door, remove the CF card, close the door, upload your images, and put the card back in, the camera will see the card slot empty and go to the SD card slot. Happens every time. The only way to have this not happen is to open the door, remove card, don't close the door, and when done with the card put it back in and close the door. The camera will still be set on the CF card.

Be careful leaving the door open because if you aren't careful you could break the door. Just sayin.

That sounds like a plausible cause. However, I always turn the camera off before removing or replacing cards. Maybe I forgot to do that.

While it has nothing to do with your issue, if you are recording to one card only, how are you using the second card? While there are a few different setup scenarios, many of us use the second card as a backup for the first. I have a 64gb CF card and a 64gb SD card. The CF card is my primary card and all shots are copied to me the SD card so I don't have to worry about losing shots due to card failure.

That's basically what I do. 128GB CF card is primary and periodically I back up the CF card to a 256GB SD card.

I'm not talking about periodically. Every shot I take is written to both the CF card and the SD card. I have redundancy all the time.

Yep, that is what happens, been there-done that.
Doesn't have to be turned on, putting a card in a slot and closing the door causes the camera to power up to verify the card and a red power light near the card bay lights for about 1 second then the camera powers down again.
Used to drive me nuts.

Well, I just confirmed this for myself! Had camera set to record on CF card, took out the CF card, closed the door, then opened and put in back in. Sure enough the camera had changed to card 2. Dang - I thought I was losing my mind! Well, now I know what's been happening!

Thanks all!

I did not know that (and I might not have figured it out). Thank you!

As long as you don't close the door the Camera will retain the settings you set. I'm glad it was something so simple, but I'm not sure I'd have figured it out either (well, maybe eventually).

Interesting. This deserves a separate post warning Canon users of this situation.

Ah...thanks, JeepDaddy! I've been frustrated by this happening to me, as well. Figured it had something to do with the camera reading that the primary card was missing and shifting to the other card. I started removing the "other" card when I take out the primary to load pics! Now I know I can just leave the door open!! Thank you for educating me on this!! And thanks, Basil, for asking the question!

Don't forget if you pull out the c.f. card and put it back in the sd card will default automatically and you have to switch back to the cf card
