I have a Europeon trip coming up in August and fear that DSLR's will not be allowed in carry on luggage. I am not packing my D500 in my luggage or in a Pelican case so need suggestions as to a decent small camera that I can carry on the plane. Something that would be better than my iPhone. I want to be prepared should a change come just prior to my flight.

I am not familiar with the Nikon lineup, but my extra camera for such issues is a Canon G-15, which allows me to take pictures in raw, or jpeg, or both at the same time. It fits into my jacket pocket. I've taken some very good shots with it.

It isn't that you will not be able to carry on DLSRs, it is that you will have to allow extra time for a more detailed search. From the TSA website, the following regarding cameras:

There is no impact on domestic flights in the United States or flights departing the United States. Electronic devices will continue to be allowed on all flights originating in the United States

Not worried about flights leaving here for now but what happens when flying back from London. And, everything can change between now and then so I want to have a plan "B". I would happily pay to have an extra security search of my camera and IPad if I could carry them with be. As a side note, I purchased a book to read during the flight if they eventually disallow Ipads.

I have no experience with big, heavy and bulky DSLRs. I used to own a couple of Nikon film bodies and 10 lenses. My choice in the digital world is that small is actually better.

I have experience with three small cameras, the Sony RX100 (Version 1), the Panasonic LX100 and now my wife's new Panasonic ZS100. It is odd that they all end in "100" but that's the way it is.

They are all very good. Small and unobtrusive often gets better travel photos than big, bulky and heavy.

IF they introduce the ban as it stands for travelling from some countries to the USA at the moment even a P&S will not be allowed. Electronic equipment must have dimensions no larger 'than a smartphone' to travel in the cabin.

I'm planning for the worst and hoping for the best! As long as I can have my camera and lenses with me when we leave for India I've planned to up my insurance coverage and remove my memory card. Then I'll place everything in my hard-cased luggage. What will be will be.

See about shipping it to the hotel you will be staying at. Freight is way more safe from thieves etc. on UPS or FedX than it is in the belly of a commercial plane. I don't trust the luggage handlers nor do I trust TSA

Just came back from a great week-long photo shoot for a week in Israel. I left my D500 home. I took a Pana/Lumix G85 with a Leica 12mm f/1.4 and a Lumix 14-140mm f/3.5-5.--about a third or quarter of the size of the Nikon. Carried it on board over my shoulder in a small Pacsafe bag with some added padding. Flew United. No problems at all. Of course Israel has its security checking right, so the TSA ban doen't apply to USA bound lights from Israel. It's the other Middle Eastern countries to which the ban applies.

What I see is the problem is all the confusing information that is online. What is needed is for someone or some group to update the issues and clarify them. I just flew and from South Africa without any hassles

The possible change is that all electronics other than a smart phone will be banned from carry-on, so getting a small camera will not help. It will still have to be in checked luggage.

Right now, you're allowed to take your camera out of the country, it's getting it back that's the worry. Carry it with you out bound, ship it back. That gives YOU the most control under the situation.

All of this buzz has me somewhat worried, since I am planning a trip in a few months.

I was planning to take my Panasonic G2 and 2 lenses. However, if that becomes a hassle, I just fished through my box of old junk, and found a Canon SD1400 (way smaller than a cell phone) and a Fuji F70EXR (about the same size a a medium cell phone, but with a lot of features). Both take quite good pictures, if not of photograph quality.

I may not have the equipment I really want, but at least I will be able to capture some images to jog my failing memory. Now, where was I planning to go?
