SKB iSeries 1309-6 Case for air travel

With all the concern over possible camera bans for carryon luggage, I purchased the above case, together with a Think Tank case cover. It seems an alternative to a Pelican case. I used it this past weekend as a carryon and it worked well. It fit under the seat in coach on Delta--even the outside aisle seat which had less space than the middle or window seat. My plan is to use it always as a carryon if possible. But, in the event the rules change, I wanted a case that I could check home in a pinch, with a chance that the equipment would survive (other than the concern over theft). My version has, in addition to the case cover, a Think Tank Lid organizer and photo dividers. It does force one to limit what you take. However, I often take much more than I use. I fit a Nikon D750, a Nikon D7200, a sigma 18-35, a sigma 50-100, a Nikon 24-85, a Kenko 1.4 teleconverter, batteries and charger in this set up. I can also replace the D750 with a a D3300, and take a Nikon 18-140 and a Tamron 150-600 G2.

I took plastic ties with me to secure the lid if I needed to do so, with extras in the top of the case with instructions to close and replace in case TSA needed to open to examine. (I know, good luck with TSA following directions like that!) Not decided on whether to get real "locks" or not, as some reports say they are useless because if TSA can open, anyone can--or they will just get cut off.

I very much like the case for what it is. I am a bit upset that I can not just travel with my Domke canvas bag as I prefer to do. I did not find the case very convenient to work out of, though fine for traveling while in transit. I am considering packing my clothes in my large Domke and then using that when I get to my destination for walk around.

I just wanted to share my "solution" with others who might be facing a similar set of bad choices. Really annoyed that I felt I had to spend money on this, not to mention all the time worrying about what might be a minimally acceptable solution. I have an already booked trip which made this necessary. Might have not made overseas plans had I known what was coming down the road.

Hope this is helpful to some of you who travel by air with camera equipment.

Thanks. I have a similar off-brand Pelican imitation.
