Buying used lens on Fred Miranda
I just learned about Fred Miranda on Uglyhedgehog this morning and checked it out. I am a beginner wanting to get a longer lens than my kit lens. The one I have decided on, after considerable research, is HALF PRICE on Fred Miranda! Listed as level 9 rating for usage. Seller bought it used. Seems too good to be true. I assume there is no warrantee via such a sale. But the price is sooo tempting! Advice please! I am not financially willing to make big investments yet. Lots to learn. Love my Sony a6000. Thanks.

You will always be faced with this debacle. :-)
I know nothing about buying from Fred Miranda, but I will say that I have purchased used lenses and have always been satisfied. However, I always ensured the lens condition was rated high. No scratches, especially on the glass. All controls work as expected. No fogginess/cloudiness in the glass. I have even used Craigslist.
I would like to think there would be some sort of warranty if the lens was not acceptable to you.
I have bought and sold quite a bit on Fred Miranda.
Every exchange has been great.
Item descriptions have been honest and in a few cases, underrated. (One camera I bought looked brand new despite the 9 rating the seller gave it)
The members there watch out for each other.
One thing to check, if it's a legitimate seller, is how many posts they have. The more, the better.
Good luck.

I buy over 50% of my used gear on Fred Miranda. Make sure you ask all the questions you need to know about the condition of the lens. Use paypal to make the transaction. This way, if there is any misrepresentation you have some recourse. Enjoy the savings!
FM is another great source to buy great camera gear if needed.
Just check out how long have they been members, how many posts,
seller rating and I like to know if they have a website to show they are a photographer like myself.
Ive bought and sold many high ticket items as Ive been a member since 2003.
Best of luck and Im sure you'll be in great hands if you just do a little bit of checking them out, but
really I have only heard of one or two problems with sellers since 2003 and thats not bad, unless its involves me or you.

As soon as you buy a new $2,000 lens, it is considered used. I always look for used and refurbished over new. I've never been disappointed. What lens are you considering?
I use Fred Miranda all the time excellent results
I have bought most of my gear used. Local dealers, craigslist, eBay, KEH, Adorama. Always look for near new condition, boxes where possible. One of my latest (Feb 2017) was a Nikkor AF 35mm f/2D in box in new condition for C$280. I am sure that buying from Fred Miranda will be great.
I am not saying that your luck will be like mine but I have bought several lenses from the Fred Miranda forum and never a single issue. Look at the rating of the person selling and how long that person has been associated with Fred Miranda. I would say that the majority of the persons selling in his forum are very honest.

Never tried Fred Miranda. I buy from the regular A, B, and C mostly. But I did have a transaction with Roberts Cameras and Roberts Use Photo. I was buying through eBay, but Roberts was the real vendor. They had listed a 50-500mm e-mount. I thought no such thing existed, but I bought it. The lens came in excellent condition. Unfortunately it wouldn't fit because it was an A-mount. They took it back without question and apologized for the mistake. Suggested that I consider an LA-EA3 or 4 and any a-mount I want. I will buy from them again.
BTW. For the a6000, I use my Sony SEL18200, 18-200 zoom. Great lens. I also have an a6300 and use the lens there as well. When I bought the latter, I also bought an f1.8 50mm for low-light. (I shoot a lot in Mexican cathedrals and churches and museums. Very dark places but no flash or tripods allowed usually. The a6000 and 6300 sensor are so good that even up to ISO 6400 there is little discernible noise. Hence, I never used the f1.8 even once.
There is an English guy that is ripping people off on photo forums. He has been banned on a number of them already. His prices are way too low, but some have felt for it. He of course uses different user names. So be careful. Do you have a link to the item you are looking at?

There was a thread started not too long ago about this individual - basically once the buyer realized that he was taken, he kept contacting the seller who finally replied and told him to F off. He claimed to have been doing this for over 10 years and he wasn't concerned at all - he claimed the police had more important things to do than go after him. Fred of course banned him but it was too late. Imagine my surprise when he showed up on mu43.com in the buy sell section. His post was very easy to recognize even though he was selling different gear. He always has low post counts, the equipment hardly used and at way too low of a price. The pictures he post are from the web.
Thanks to all who replied and encouraged me! I have registered at Fred Miranda and private messaged the seller. I don't understand how he can have over 5000 postings, however! Name is khiromu. Member since 2003. Lenses I am interested in are his 30mm macro ($180) and 55-210mm ($170), both supposed to be for E-mount Sony A6000. Both rated "9--some wear but clean." Will see what response I get.
I bought my $6000 Leica on FM for $4000, as well as most of my high-end lenses. Always a pleasure.
