OK, I'm definitely in a panic over my D500's not working correctly:
Every time I press shutter, it opens for about a second then closes.
Does this in every mode and setting.
Screen on top looks OK with the aperture and speed settings and whatever other settings also look OK. . . But even in shutter priority, 8000, continuous high . . . It still opens shutter for about one second then closes it . . .
Changed battery, lens, tried to check every setting, still no change . . .
HELP . . .
OK . . . Maybe it was a false alarm . . . I found the "reset all settings to default" in the menu, and that seems to have fixed things . . .
Don't know what made it start acting up . . .
Cautionary tale if it happens to you . . .
I'll go with it now and see if it behaves itself . . .

Here’s something that most Nikon DSLR shooters probably know already, but perhaps some of you don’t… Most Nikon DSLRs feature two small green dots somewhere near buttons on the back or top of the camera. Those dots tell you how to do a factory reset of your camera to default settings.
It’s a feature called “Two Button reset”: simply hold down 2 particular buttons at the same time for 2 seconds, and your camera settings will be restored to factory defaults.
The Nikon D500 is reset by holding the Quality and Exposure Compensation buttons on top:
I would also try removing the battery and turning it on for say 30 seconds before turning it off and replacing the battery
If these fail to help its probably in need of an actual repair.

Are you saying that the shutter stays open for one second over exposing the picture??
Only have had it for about a month and it's been working fine . . .
Only thing I did differently (last night) attached an off brand PT-DFLEXT1N flash to it and took some picks . . .
Maybe that flash messed things up somehow . . . (It worked fine with my D3300) . . . ?
Reset to Defaults seems to have worked . . . Phew ! ! !
You could do a firmware repeat. The most recent one. If possible.

My D500 is quite new, but it needed a firmware update right out of the box.
Your reboot was a good move but you don't want to have to do that in the future after you have spent hours and hours customizing your camera controls. In that possible eventuality it would behoove one to store their custom settings on small memory card ahead of time.
From your explanation, I would suggest that perhaps you may have accidentally placed the camera in quiet release mode.

OK . . . How do you do that ? Don't remember reading that anywhere . . .

Glad you got it fixed but the next time something like this happens calmly search your configuration menu instead of zapping your configuration. If you see something suspicious change it. If it doesn't fix it change it back. I duplicated your problem on my d500 by changing the setting below to.... 3 seconds!
It also happened to me exactly like you described. Shutter priority 8000 etc after changing lenses. I also panicked before doing a reset.
