I have several DSLR's. Some have a dedicated button for BBF.....others, I have to assign a button. My question is.....does a remote still work w/ BBF w/ a dedicated button AND/or.......an assigned button? Some of these remotes actually focus and then you can take the shot.....guess I'm thinking it won't work if you have an assigned button...
Thanks........

It is never the remote that does the focusing, it is always the camera....

Anyway, if you assign a BBF, On a Nikon, use of an IR remote will cause the camera to auto focus normally, but a wired remote will not focus before tripping the shutter.

When you use an IR remote with a Nikon, focus then switch from auto focus to manual focus to lock in your setting. Recompose if desired then step back wait a moment for the camera to 'quiet' then use the remote.

Yes, agree fully

Most time when using a remote I use manual focus myself

On my T1i, my remote only does what the shutter button would do.
I have focusing assigned to another button, and my shutter button no longer performs the focus function.

Right.....I have really come to like BBF.....but using it, it disables the shutter from focusing.....which of course everyone knows. I 'thot' I'd read where some remotes will focus, I guess using the 'shutter function' and then complete it by taking the pic.....I wasn't sure just how it all worked...only that I loved BBF and have put it on all my cameras.....thank you for your imput

Yea, once I found out I could set BBF I never went back. I hated exposure lock and focus on the same button. You can't focus on one point and meter on another.

Same here Longshadow. Some expressed having a time to adjust. I never had any issues. My only issue is if I 'can't' find a way to use BBF. I think I have all my cameras set now....even my Nikon D50! So I'm a happy camper!
Thanks again for imput

There was a lengthy discussion about this a few weeks ago. If only I could remember the answer!

I believe the conclusion was that you set the camera to Remote, use BBF to set the focus, and then use the remote when you're ready. Experimentation with your camera and remote is the best way to find out.

My Nikon's have assigned back button focus. However they have additional modes. I can go to U2 for instance and it has pristine (out of the box) settings so I use it for my remote shots.

Now I really feel foolish. I thought all you had to do was plug the remote in and the camera recognized that it was plugged in...... And you were ready to go! I didn't know you had to go into settings
, somewhere, and make a change to remote. I will definitely have to look into this. Thank you Jerry

Using a remote trigger will not change focus if you have your camera set up for BBF. You should be able to find the settings in your camera manual. For my camera, D810, the instructions are under AF-Activation [setting is "AF-On only"]
