Recommend focusing rail

I currently have a flimsy focusing rail and I want to upgrade to something sturdier and more suitable for focus stacking. I am using a Nikon D7200 and an f/2.8 105mm Nikkor macro lens plus extension tubes on a sturdy tripod. Can any of you fellow Hoggers recommend a reasonably priced focusing rail?

Novoflex Castel-L is what I use and I find this very good. Sometimes if your lucky you can find these on Ebay. Good luck in your choice.

Novoflex is certainly the way to go. I own the Castel-L as well and it is wonderful piece of precision engineering.

I have this one from Oben. It does the job and not quite as expensive as a Novoflex.

I've used a Manfrotto 454 and was happy with the results. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/554343-REG/Manfrotto_454_454_Micrometric_Positioning_Sliding.html

If you're interested, check out http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-450599-1.html. Posted by rwilson1942 in March. It starts with the Oben MFR4 and tweaks the design a bit.

I've used a Velbon Superslider for several years now. Very smooth movements without any slack. It's a 4-way, but I removed the side to side part and only use the part that moves forward.

Adorama used to make one with their name on it; works great.

Former machinist here....
The rails with hardened steel rods coupled with a screw drive will generally have less play in them. For those working at greater magnifications: finer threads will allow for more precise adjustments. Of course quality is a factor, and RRS has a great rep.
