Hi, I'm starting to organize my photos and backing them up. So far I've transferred folders to an external HHDD, but I want to copy them to a tablet so I can take them with me and view them without a computer. At this point I'm not interested to load videos or music, and the internet speed, if any, is secondary. I don't want to expend a fortune, and I'm interested on the lower price I can get, and still have a reasonable quality.
Can anybody advice me on what would my choices be? I'll appreciate your help

Safest, most convenient place for your photos is in the cloud. All providers will use a RAID storage which places several copies of your data out there and provides high levels of encryption so only you know what the data is. If you delete your pictures off your storage location, you have 90 days to realize what you did and request recovery.
Now, imagine you go someplace w/o your laptop, and someone asks about a photo - you can sit down at any computer and sign-in and pull up that photo. Because I automatically store my photos to µsoft cloud, all my photos are available on my phone, and the photos I take with my phone will be waiting for men when I open my laptop.
You can copy them to a Micro-SD card. Most tablets with accept the cards, at least the ones I have will. I have videos on a Micro-SD cards I use so I can take movies and videos with me to watch while I'm waiting at the DMV, the doctor's office or where ever.

How much space do all your photos take up? Most tablets have somewhat limited storage. Not to mention the time involved with copying vast quantities.
Is the purpose of viewing to continue organizing? See the next point. Doing a little here and then a little there is a recipe for chaos. Not to mention the hassles of synchronizing between the 2 locations.
When viewing, will you have access to power? Yes, take your external, plug it in and connect to the tablet and view from the external. If no power then get off your but and get out and shoot some more photos.

Post your finished images as JPG files to a web site like Flicker - there are many of them... then just use your tablet or phone to link to them - takes no space on your device, and can allow others to view them as well if you allow it.
Thank you all. I did consider the cloud option , but I still need to resolve the tablet option. I will not use it to PP my pictures, but it will be a means to display and organize the selections of my backed up photos. Capacity won't be a problem as I can use a USB thumb drive if I have to.
Thanks again

Thanks for posting this, Sebastian. I have the same question, and local photography friends don't have the specific answer.

I use Google Photos, and that lets me see everything that's there using any device. I doubt my 70,000 photos would fit on my iPad 2 with 16GB of memory.
FYI: I am not aware of many tablets that will take a USB drive. Some will take an SD or micro-SD card.
Good luck.
Take a look at the Microsoft Surface Pro tablet. It has a micro SD slot AND a USB. Make sure it is a Surface PRO however. The Microsoft Surface (not pro) uses a different processor, and will not work with a lot of the regular PC software. The Pro versions use an intel processor, and are compatible with any PC software. I use the Surface Pro 3,aand would go that route again in a heartbeat.

That has gotten great press, but I can't figure out how they came up with that name. The original one was the Surface Pro, right? Then they had versions 2, 3, and 4. Now they go back to "Surface Pro"? Will they have another "Surface Pro 2"?

I completely agree. I, too, was looking for a tablet for similar reasons and though the Surface set me back more than many other options, it has turned out to be a really versatile bit of equipment, and has taken the place of a picture viewer and laptop in the 'bargain.' You might, as I did, find a gently used one (in my case at a local computer store, but check Craig's list). Do go for the PRO, as stated before.
I believe the original was the "Surface". It used a strange version of Windows, "Windows RT". It was not good. I now have the Surface Pro 3. I love it! It supports Lightroom, and Photoshop, as well as Microsoft Office (the full versions of all 3 programs). I haven't found a ned yet to upgrade to the Surface Pro 4.
