I was raised in El Paso so White Sands was wonderful to go to. It is very hot in the summer but Ruidoso and Cloudcroft are just above it and cool.
take the trip if you go close to that area.

Came through Cloudcroft on my way into Alamagordo - in heavy fog, and went through Ruidoso on my way to Roswell. Interesting places and I would love to go back. Thanks for looking and commenting.

Thank you for looking and I am glad you enjoyed them. I don't know if you will be able to do night photography - they might have certain nights that they have for photography, but when I was there, the gates to the dunes closed at 8:00 p.m. With sunset at about 7:35, it was interesting trying to get photographs and then get to the gates before they closed.

I should have been more clear. I'm an old coot and that trip was in the early 1970's. I'm sure, like me, much has changed.

I am the Treasurer for our local Fire Department and took a half day to do payroll and find a Wells Fargo to process the direct deposit. After that was completed, I did some other errands before heading back to White Sands, hoping that the light would be better, the wind had quit, and I would get a decent sunset. I hiked into the dunes a way hoping to find that the overnight wind would have erased human footprints from the dunes. Footprints were erased, but other tracks were all over the dunes and under the bushes from night-time foraging. Anyone who says that the desert is devoid of life should have been with me to see these tracks. There was no wind, and no storm clouds to obscure the sunset. This time I was successful on all counts.

It is absolutely worth a trip back, only next time my mission is to find someone with some clout that can get me into the dunes at night for photography. I also liked the old Mission Impossible TV series...................so this may be my Mission Impossible. Thanks for looking and commenting.

Auntie, these bring back memories from the early 60's! I remember the sand was so hot, my feet felt they were on fire!

Thank you for looking and commenting. Glad you liked them. Once I got into the dunes and saw the tracks, I was fascinated at the amount of "traffic" that had been there. I would bet that other people would tramp right across the dunes and never pay any attention to something like that.

I live on the ocean, so know all about hot sand, so kept my shoes on. I did have to pick up the "sand" in my hand though, and it had a totally different feel to it than regular sand. Felt almost like laundry soap to me. Glad I brought back fond memories for you. Thanks for looking and commenting.

I truly enjoyed your photos of White Sands, having been there two weeks ago. I especially love the animal tracks. When I was there the temperature was in the mid 90's and the sand felt perfectly comfortable to the touch. But I had to laugh so much about your description of the un-paved road. It is the worst wash-board road I have ever taken my car on, and yes I was convinced it was going to fall apart right there and then. Since I do not drive a SUV I did not have the courage to drive all the way to the end, so very unfortunate. But White Sands offers Full Moon ranger led hikes and Full Moon Bike Rides as well As Full Moon events with music etc. During those designated days I am sure you will be able to take the nighttime photos you were not able to take on this trip. Their website shows all these dates for 2017.

I am so glad you enjoyed the photos. I am glad I was not the only one to find the unpaved road to be a menace to modern machinery. I didn't have an SUV - rented a Toyota Corolla in Dallas where I flew into on this trip, and I know other people thought I was a scaredy cat by motoring at 5 mph through the worst bumps. If I ever get back in that area, I will check to see when full moon programs at the Park are.
