Can anyone identify what this is and the purpose of it. It was the rear tire of a semi trailer.
Looks like it is a tire pressure sensor, but that is just a guess.
It equalizes the air between the two tires.

The trailer axle has air pressure in it and maintains pressure in the two trailer tires.
There are probably other features built in/involved, I don't know them.
This system will work trailer tires. Maybe, on a tag axle on the tractor.
Does not work on drive axles.
To my knowledge, this is for 18 wheelers.

I had this on my 18 wheeler. Works for any dual tire location.
This will equalize the two tires until the air pressure get down to 80% of what the gauge is set for.
In this case the gauge is built for 100lbs. If one of the tires has a leak, will equalize down to 80lbs.
Then the tire with the leak will go flat if not caught before. The other tire will hold 80lbs pressure.
The are in the middle will turn to red if the air pressure drops 3 or 4 lbs.
Easy to walk around and visually, see if tire pressure are correct.
Worked very well for me.

Thanks so much. It's great to be able to tap into the UHH bank of information. Way better than Google!!!

Clever idea. I wonder if I could get that to work on my car.
It's called an air go. It is to keep the tires aired up to pressure.
Another use for this setup is to lower and the inflate tires on a concrete mixer truck so the truck can be driven in sand or soft dirt. I drove one for a while and could go in sand here, eastern NC, with 11 yards of concrete, that was hard to walk in. People were amazed to see where I could drive the truck and not get stuck. The tire could be adjusted from the cab and while driving from 30 to 120 lbs. of air pressure.

My car monitors the air pressure on all the tires constantly and has a readout on the dash to tell me what it is. And if it drops below a certain level it alerts me.
