I am going to Europe in August and thinking about purchasing a compact hard drive to transfer my photos from my D500 every night. I usually take my iPad and have used it relying on my cloud storage. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Have a look at the Western Digital My Passport drives.
Available from 1Tb to 4-or 5Tb I think. They start at about $60 for the 1Tb at Best Buy.

At that price, get two and back up to both of them. Peace of mind.

I have three or four Western Digital "My Passport Ultra" drives, and they work great for me. I purchased semi hard carry cases from Amazon for them, and they fit perfectly in the cases.

I would carry the drive in a separate bag from my camera, so that if one is somehow lost or stolen, you haven't lost both.

Just FYI, disk drives are far more fragile than any solid-state devices. I would recommend an SSD instead of a rotating drive.

I am not familiar with iPads, so I don't know if you can attach a USB device to it. On my Samsung Note Pro tablet, using an OTG cable lets me connect to the camera or an SD reader and import the pictures and then push them back out to a 256GB USB thumb drive. Thumb drives are far more resilient than HDDs.

In 10 years of using WD portable drives, I have never had a failure. The WD Passport, with its SD slot is purpose made for Photographers.
You may find in Europe, internet access is not as ubiquitous as it is here.

That was my thought, but the price is much higher. I have one of these "military drop test" drives, and the price is reasonable.

To move photos with some storage:
a. WD My Passport Wireless Pro. Big hard drive and battery. Automatic backup for SD card.
b. Kingston MobileLite Pro
c. RAVPower FileHub
Storage which can be powered by items above:
a. Lexar Portable SSD 512GB drive, $125 @ Costco. No moving hard drive. Low power
b. SanDisk 256GB flash drive, $40 @ Costco. Small and cheap. Plenty of other flash drive options
