My first Pentax, an ME SE that I purchased in 1979, was ruined when it became slightly damp at Niagara Falls in 1981. My most recent Pentax, a K-30, is WR and I regularly take it out in rain. There most certainly is a different between the two.
If you read what I said in my post I made it clear that weather resistance could work or not. It will work to perfection with a professional camera. Even if water resistant, which does not mean water proof, I would not dare to use a camera when it is raining but as I said, that is me. An electronic camera can fail and water is not friendly to electricity.
In the Miami area we are pretty close to the ocean and it happens that maritime photography is one of my favorites. My cameras are not water resistant and I make sure when I come back after photographing to clean them with a wet rag and let them dry thoroughly before I store them in a container with a desiccant.
If I see two cameras, one without water resistance and one water resistant and the camera that is not weather resistant is a few hundred dollars less I certainly will go for it.
If you always shoot when it is raining I would certainly recommend a water resistance camera and take your chances. In my case a zip lock is all I need if I am using a camera without such protection but I cannot remember when was the last time I used a camera in the rain.
What happens if you take just one camera and it malfunctions. 😂. Hate to take the time to go to Hawaii and have limited pics to show.
deleted because I can't read.
If you don't know what camera to use or take, no one can help.

I am new to the UHH but I've been taking photos for a long time. This August I am going to Hawaii and can not decide on my second camera to take. I am taking my Panasonic bridge camera that can zoom to 600mm. For my second camera I don't know, I own both of these camera) should it be my Sony a6000 with a 18-105mm f/4 lens or my Pentax k50 with a sigma 27-270mm lens. I will basically be shooting scenery, your typical tourist pictures, but also my family. Any suggestions.
We go to Hawaii at least every other year and I bring my "prime" camera, which used to be a bridge camera (Canon S-3IS which was replaced by a Canon SX40 HS). In 2015 I also took my Garmin Virb action cam with the suction cup mount and a dive case. I took time lapse videos with it mounted to the windshield and snorkeling videos using the dive case. This summer I'm planning on taking the Virb again, but also my Canon 80D with my EF-S 18-135 and EF 70-300 lenses. I might not take the 70-300, but probably will. I'm also going to get an EF-S 10-18 before we go for landscape and sunset photos.
