the coolpix will be lighter for you but I agree with some of the suggestions you have gotten if you have room and want raw files then a dslr with a couple lenses would also be a great choice. I have a Nikon B700 that creates NRW raw files as well as jpg files and it is a light option I would take both the bridge camera and a dslr with a couple lenses.
As for flying well my son just flew out from New York state (Rochester), and he had delays both here and back but that is what we have to put up with when we fly nowadays,
I myself need valium to fly but a couple drinks if you do so, or a good book helps. Remember just have fun.

We are travelling this summer for vacation. And, we would normally take 2 ea. DSLRs, numerous lenses, monopods, tripods, flash units, etc. while on vacation. But, we are usually driving and have plenty of room for all that stuff in the car. For this trip, however, we are flying. And, I am beginning to think that all that photo gear will become a burden, rather than a pleasure. Perhaps all that stuff isn't really necessary on this trip.

So, I am starting to consider smaller, compact cameras, such as the Nikon Coolpix A900 instead. And, I know there are many excellent compact cameras on the market. I am looking for suggestions... I'd like the camera to be compact, have good zoom, good resolution, good IQ, tilt screen, etc.. I am used to RAW images, but could handle JPGs. Trying to keep the cost reasonable, too.

If you have a recommendation, please let me know... I'm not partial to any particular brand, BTW. Thanks!

I'd love to know what you decide. I am having the same dilemma. Do not want to carry DSLRs, however, do want sharpest shots possible at all focal ranges and raw capability.

I'm a recent convert to the Panasonic LX100 for the same reason you are looking.
RAW files, Leica lense (24-70 equivalent), great viewfinder, etc.
Haven't yet printed any results but reviews are good.
I wore myself out carrying the D7100 complete with heavy Nikon lenses around South America last year and ended up just using the 24-70 2.8, so the little LX100, for me, seems at this stage anyway, perfect.

I never travel with just one camera. I am too paranoid that something will happen to it. It will either quit working or get stolen or lost. I carry two bodies that use the same lenses or my other option is a DSLR with a zoom lens and my Canon SX50HS which has a large zoom range.

I would buy the Fuji XT20. This new camera is compact and shoots raw and the JPEGs from this travel camera are outstanding. Coupled with the Fuji 18 to 135 (27 to 206) you would be set and get outstanding photos. Unfortunately, this camera and lens are both on back order since this Fuji was introduced in March 2017. If you order soon I am sure that the camera should be in before your trip.

That looks like a very good camera... Unfortunately, its a bit expensive for me. And, might not be available in time for the trip. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

If one were to choose to go in that (Fujifilm X-T20) direction; there's the X-E2S, that can often be had for a bargain price. One (w/18-55mm kit zoom) on eBay just sold for $567.00. (that's what I paid for mine, as well)

Described as: "Beautiful camera, indistinguishable from new, hardly used at all"
