At the risk of being reported by the topic police, I will say that I use a fluid video pan/tilt head instead of a gimbal - and I prefer to use it on a monopod vs a tripod for the mobility/lighter weight - and, like the gimbal - is great for following action. There, I plead guilty as charged.....PM me if you want to know which one I use .....

Would your set up work with a 600mm prime??

Thanks, could you show a shot from the front, how much room do you have between the side of the camera and the gimbal? I see this mounted but is it or can you balance the set up. Looks like it might be front heavy. I'm about 1/2" to 3/4" short of having room to mount mine without an extended mounting plate on my camera. There have been times that I wished I could have mounted a camera body with a short lens on the gimbal for a one time shot like when I forgot to carry the second head for the tripod and I don't want to hike a mile back to the car. I see where RRS sells a raised platform to overcome this dilemma.
Thanks, could you show a shot from the front, how ... (show quote)

OK, here are pics of both the 6D and 7DII body mounted with the supplied 6" QR plate.
Note a few things:
1. I have them mounted backwards from what most people consider proper, the camera is hanging off on the right side.* Most would mount it hanging off on the left so that side is open for your hand to reach the lens' rings etc.
2. The body is up against the lock for the arm to slide up and down but even the 24-105 makes it front heavy and it needs to be moved back to balance. With my 50 mm it is just about balanced in this position.

*When I first got the gimbal head I knew nothing about using one and didn't take time to check. Just screwed on the QR plate and put it on, this way. I got told I had it wrong. Didn't seem that way to me, I don't use the zoom or MF rings much. I mean the purpose of a long lens is to be long so I cranked it out and left it there. On BIF or anything else the AF is a lot faster than I am so I don't MF a lot either. I did start to put it on the other way just to keep people from looking at me funny. I do things just the same either way. But when using it with a small light lens and mounting the QR to the camera body I go back to mounting it "backwards".

Someone mentioned the dampening fluid leaking and being sticky. Yes in very hot weather that can happen. I am just careful and clean it off. Hey, my skin is mostly waterproof and I can wash my hands. And in very cold weather the fluid will get stiff and the head will be hard to move. They make an "Arctic" model for cold weather with much thinner fluid.
But the dampening is great, makes for very smooth movement and keeps an unbalanced rig from dropping fast and banging either the lens or the body on something.
Most good video/movie heads are fluid dampened and I under stand that you get occasional leaks of fluid from all but the expensive ones. And even from those after they have been used a lot and are worn or knocked around.

I bought my travel gimbal for GBP167 and it really is the bees knees. They also do heavier models. Here's the link:http://www.lensmaster.co.uk/index.htm. They ship to the US and don't charge an arm and a leg.

Thanks for the view, yes it would appear backwards but whatever works for you. The 7DMKII looks like it's almost forced on and at an angle. I'll just have to carry my extra ball head which I can change out in under 10 seconds because with the JOBU none of my cameras will fit. Thanks again and I hope you had a pleasant night with your family.

7DII is not forced on, slide in from the other side until it touched the lock tab. And it looks tilted because it is a third party battery grip that was free with the camera. The mount hole is not high precision and out of true, but I hardly ever mount it on the grip so it doesn't bother me. The rest of the grip works fine

It would be a challenge. I certainly have not used a 600 prime - but I have used 300 2.8 with 1.4 and 2X.

I THINK it could be done - with a first rate tripod ( naturally) and a first rate fluid head.

Thanks, some how I didn't think you were using a tripod but a mono-pod and the fluid head sure sounds a lot safer then a ball head.

Regarding monopods, I have a steel monopod that I made with a Manfro 3063 on it that I would be the most comfortable with for 500/600 f4's ....but there are better/more expensive fluid heads than that Manfro ! I use a KingJoy fluid head for my smaller lenses and really like it.

Thanks, I'm going to look up some of this.
