Welcome to UHH Blackhawk, glad you joined us. When you make your final choice of brand and model do not overlook purchasing a refurbished one. ONY do so from a reputable firm such as Adorama, B&H or Cameta.
Have fun, learn and enjoy the forum.

With that kind of budget I might upgrade to a used Panasonic Lumix LX100 instead of the LX5 or LX7. The LX100 is a Micro Four Thirds fixed Leica zoom 24-75 (35mm equivalent) fast f1.7-f2.8 lens. The sensor is about four times greater area than the LX5-7 recommended earlier and also has both an LCD screen viewer plus an excellent electronic view finder built-in. The much larger sensor will result in a vastly superior image quality. On eBay the cost would be about $400 to $500 in excellent condition.

I actually have a budget around $500 and plan on having whatever I buy for years to come if that makes sense.
