Hummingbirds are starting to return

The little Ruby-throats are starting to return to the garden. The female is extremely territorial, so I'm surprised she let the male stick around.

They are brazen. They'll hover in front of the kitchen bay window and stare me down if the feeder needs refilling.

I'd love to get any photos like yours. My question/reply does not involve photography as much as it does involve your set up (feeder) for the birds. I can't seem to put out nectar in my feeder before I have a swarm of ants helping themselves and I guess scaring away the birds. How do you avoid this problem ?? Thank you in advance for any help you can offer. Bill.

Hi, Bill. I don't think I do anything in particular, except maybe the feeder stand (which is really looks like a shepherd's crook, bought at Wildbirds Unlimited, I think) placement. I think the ants favor the peonies over the hummingbird feeder.
