About 4 miles west of Study Butte, Texas is the "ghost town" of Terlingua, in which Cinnabar was discovered and from which "quick sliver" or mercury was extracted through mining in the 1880s. There is an interesting cemetery there that dates to the early 1900s and was used to bury the miners working at the Chisos Mining Company, and is still used today. Some of the graves are very plain, some are elaborate, and most have some sort of offerings left on them. There was a Marine Corps Sgt. buried there that was a Purple Heart recipient from the Korean War who had beads, candles and change left on his grave. Since I am a Marine Corps Mom, I left some change as well and gave him a Semper Fi. In October people return to the cemetery to celebrate the Day of the Dead. There are the ruins of adobe houses used by the miners, but there is still life in Terlingua that consists of some occupied dwellings, a community garden, and the Starlight Theater and general store where musicians play from time to time. There is also a chili cook-off contest each year that draws people from far and wide. Right now there are approximately 60 people living in Terlingua, not counting dogs, cats, and lizards.

Interesting is a very polite word I would use. Some of the people are throwbacks to the 60s. Thanks for looking.
Love your two bar stools! Also a neat flower!
A truly fascinating series of images for me. Each one of these reminded me of our visit to Big Bend NP and Terlingua a few years ago.

I liked the stools as well, and when the Mexican Bird of Paradise bush is in full bloom it is an amazing sight. Thanks for looking and commenting.

Glad I stirred up fond memories for you. I just scratched the surface of this place and would like to go back for a longer look sometime. Thanks for commenting.

These are all fantastic and beautifully done, AuntieM! Ya know, I think you could be a writer as well as a photographer...your descriptions are always so well done!

Wow - such a compliment is truly appreciated. I try to write so people can visualize what I saw, and maybe what I felt, and I am happy to know that I have succeeded in that endeavor. Thanks for joining me on my exploration of Texas and New Mexico.
