So this morning I was enjoying a nice, quiet, pre-sunrise stroll when out from the bushes emerged a tumble of red fur and blue feathers!
'Round and 'round they went until the blue feathers were quiet. Then, in an expert maneuver, the rust colored fur finished its prey and started to gut its trophy!
That's right - it was just a harmless little squirrel --- But it had big, sharp, pointy teeth!!! (Like Monty Python's rabbit!)

As I stood there in horror, I grabbed my little point-n-shoot and at maximum zoom, started to chronicle the incident.
Again and again, the red fiend bent down, gorging itself on the victim's blood and innards.

Occasionally the undead beast looked up, to make sure none of its squirrel kin were anywhere within eyesight.

Then it returned to its victim, continuing to satiate it's unnatural desires.

Suddenly, it hears something- It realizes someone or something is nearby!

No, Noooo...!!! I have been discovered!
It stares at me with evil eyes and evil heart!
I run, as fast as my feet can take me. Hopefully I won't stumble..... and... FALL!!!
So this morning I was enjoying a nice, quiet, pre-... (show quote)

Tree Rats as I refer to them critters, are notorious nest raiders. Often seen them pursued by a parental bird along the upper branches of our trees protecting their nest and fledglings. Perhaps this is one case that turned into a battle to the death.

WoW! Who would have thunk? Looks like proof to me. Seen pics of a deer eating a dead human in the CSI lot.

I have heard of squirrels attacking and eating chipmunks. I would think a bird would be more difficult to catch but your pictures prove they can do it!!!! Great series!!!

WHEW!!! That does sound weird! Funny though.

Thanks to all for your comments.

My brother-in-law who is a bird photographer, says he is not at all surprised. I guess it just dashed my image of them as cute, fuzzy, vegetarian little creatures.
I do believe that was the female, who has a nest in our wood-haus (round, stacked fire-wood structure), so perhaps she was "in a family way" and needed the protein.

Don't let their cuteness fool you! Most of nature's killers are cute.
