I recently bought a gadget to connect the smart card
from my Nikon D750 to my iPad.
Can anyone tell me if I need a special app to see the photos
and or upload them into the iPhoto ??
Nothing seems to happen when I plug it in and I don't see anything
pop up??

You should see the photos beginning to upload. Make sure the iPad is fully charged and if it is an sdhc card, it's possible you may have inadvertently flipped the protect images switch on the side of the card. It's happened to me more times than I'd like to admit.

Are you referring to the memory card?
What, exactly, is the gadget to which you refer?
I use an Apple "Lightening to SD Card Camera Reader" to transfer images directly to my iPad from my D7200 as well as 3 other cameras I have. No problems.

You should see an app that says "PHOTOS" .. it looks like a pin wheel of different colors .. Ask SIRI .., she will find it for you ..

When you open up the iPad and you have the screen of apps .. slide that entire screen to the right .. you should see that app sitting under the heading of "SIRI SUGGESTED APPS" .. click on it ..

I have an IPAD PRO 12.9 .. whatever IPad you have .., it has to have a lightening connector ...and as one astute member said ... the memory card lock has to be off ...if all else fails .., get to the allele store ...they will show you many tricks ... good luck ....

Yes, you need an app for the device. I have had two card readers for this purpose and the each would only work with it's own proprietary app. Check your device's web site.

Using an SD card to Lightning adapter, the upload/import should begin automatically when you plug in the SD card - no additional ap needed. Instructions here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202037 and here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202299

Here is how I copy photos and videos to/from my iDevice and PC.

I use an iPhone/iPad app called PhotoTransferApp. This program allows me to copy photos and videos between my iDevice and PC or Mac, both upload and download. There is an app that is also available for a PC or Mac, but you do not need it. You can use the iPhone/iPad app by itself, and use your browser to control your PC/Mac. Now matter which direction I want to copy photos or videos, this is my approach.

Whenever I want to backup my photos/videos to my iPhone/iPad from my camera (like when I am on a trip), I use the Apple camera adapter. I used to take my laptop on trips for this purpose. Now I just backup my daily photos to my iPad. For a trip, I make sure I have a sufficient number of cards to hold all of my anticipate images and videos.

When you have the card/adapter firmly plugged into the iPad, you may not get the upload screen popping up. Look down at the very bottom of the screen. There should be four icons. The one on your far right is the camera icon. Click on it and the upload screen will start. You'll get thumbnails of what's there and can upload all or just selected and will have a choice to leave them on the card when finished or delete them. I always leave them on the card. Any files previously loaded will be marked so you won't be trying to upload them again.

Two comments;
1) You want to transfer photos from your D7200 to your iPad, use the Wi-Fi from your camera. Download the Nikon 'wireless mobility utility' onto your iPad, it is free and works great, and fast.
2) Another possibility is to download to a WD My Passport Wireless Pro 1 TB portable hard drive ($150 @ B&H), either through Wi-Fi, or by inserting the sd card from your camera. Don't need to have your iPad with.
Hope these help.

I, too, have a "dongle" to insert an SD card into one end and plug the other end into the lightening port. The iPad has to be on and the images download automatically to Photos.

This has worked flawlessly for me on every trip over the last 1 & 1/2 years EXCEPT for the last upload on this trip. It APPEARS that the pictures uploaded; but if I try to edit one of them, I get a message, "cannot open photo".

Perhaps someone knows what is happening and can not only help me; but also, prevent this from happening to the OP.

You should use the adapter made by Apple for use specifically with your iPad. Other, off brands may not work, or need an app to make it work with the iPad. The Apple brand makes it somple. Plug it into the iPad's lightning port, slide the card into the slot and the images will start to download automatically. It should also automatically call up Photos on the iPad. If none of this works, I suggest taking it to your local Apple Store and have them help you.

The iPad is great to use as a backup when you are away from home. And you can see much better the ones you just want to delete. The down side is, I have not found an easy way to retrieve those photos and copy them into a computer once back at home. JimR

If you have a Mac, they should automatically go to your computer from your iPad via iCloud. If you have a PC, you may have to look for an adapter that goes from lightning plug to USB to load them on your computer.

All my devices are synced but sometimes Photos is slow to transfer all images. My main goal for loading onto iPad is twofold: viewing & backup. Sometimes I edit a few and send to family.

I find it easier to just put the SD card in the computer when I get home & import them into LR.

My adapter is an Apple brand. I can use a camera-specific app and upload all images from the camera wirelessly, though and that's what I ended up doing. I have my Sony on this trip.

I just don't understand why the iPad can't open the latest photos for editing. If no one knows the answer, I'll figure it out when I get home.
