a swing.....and a miss

This one was good in theory, but I still have some work to do for the wedding next week to dial it in.

Blue gelled flash on 1/64 power, dropped exposure down 2 stops. Still took quite a bit of tweaking to get it to where it is.

More experimenting to follow. I have a vision of what I want, and this isn't quite it. I actually didn't think the wood trim and window blinds would show up, I was hoping they would be black, and just the light would come through. I think I needed to get the light, and them, further away from the back wall. I had to work with where they were. (dance floor was maybe 12'x12')

Anyway, here it is.

GOBO behind the light to keep it off the background?

Good idea, I am wondering though, if no light goes backwards, will you still "see" the blue light, or will it be more of a blur rim?

I don't know, just wondering out loud???

Not sure if it would help, but I wonder if the flash was higher...maybe midway up?
or (to save that floor spot, that looks kinda neat).even a second flash added midway up?
The BG looks like it might be fairly easy to photoshop once you get the rim you are looking for.(But everytime I think that-it seems photoshop bites me).

I thought about it, but this is one of those REALLY rare occasions where I just don't want to do any extra work on behalf of the couple. They actually like it, while it drives me nuts. The main thing is that they were a "hostile" group from the get go. I wasn't 100% sure that the wedding was going to happen. At the rehearsal, MOB kept calling the groom a "stupid f---er". Groom said some really mean things to the bride.... The families hate each other, and the B&G didn't seem too fond of each other. I almost left the church before the wedding, because they were 1-1/2 hour late getting there, and I couldn't get anyone to answer the phone. Was just getting ready to start packing up, when Mother of the Bride showed up.

I really wasn't excited about the wedding when I booked it, but this is a second generation wedding for me. (my record is 3 generations....grandma, mom, and daughter all used me) I like this MOB, and completely understood her dislike of the groom and his family, but it was rough. I can't bring myself to spend a lot of time doing much more than a few cursory edits.

The one this week is going to be a "party group," At least I think the couple likes each other. I'm hoping we get that "connection" and I can get some magical shots. After sitting out last year, I still feel pretty rusty.

I thought about it, but this is one of those REALL... (show quote)

Cool, I bet you could have brought some great expressions from the groom using his nickname "stupid f---er". Set your shutter to burst mode in case he comes after you. I am laughing with you Bob!

Great idea with the blue gel. Keep experimenting. I think in this case the easiest fix would be to get them in front of one consistent background. Preferably not blinds. If you need to expand the background that is quick in PS. I totally understand why you don't want to do any more work on their behalf. They wouldn't appreciate it.

White reflective, it should still give the color?

Completely understand! I've not done nearly as many weddings as you, but I have had 2 similar thus far. Both I was doing cheap to 'Help the families' - both bit me in the butt. Just takes all the fun out.
But I hope you follow thru with this idea, I think you are onto something...a unique look.

We may have to try this on Saturday. I guess what I keep thinking is that it will just light up the reflector, and we'll just see the 42" white reflector, instead of the wall. Actually, doing it this weekend should be easier. The barn walls won't look quite as stupid as the huge window and the wainscoting/wood trip.

I did forget to mention, it was only about 6:30 pm, so in this photo, the room was fairly bright, with light pouring through the blinds.

All in all, it could have gone worse.
