Folks, a few weeks ago my wife and I drove to Surry County North Carolina in search of my roots. My family came to America from Scotland where they first settled in North Carolina. I didn't have much luck finding any graves but I did find some great friends in Andy (aka One Easyrider and his friend Linda). Andy Griffith grew up in Mt.Airy and much of the Andy Griffith Show is based on his hometown, they just called it Mayberry instead on the TV show. There are lots of Mayberry related displays and shops in Mt. Airy. Sadly, it rained most of the time we were there...but that didn't stop us from having a good time in Mayberry anyway. Here are a few shots of some of the fun things we found. Hope you folks enjoy a trip back along memory lane.
These are nasty ole jpegs shot on a Sony RX10M3, processed with PSE10 with XXL, and Topaz Adjust for a bit of flair.

This is a very nice set, Jim. But I wonder, does the Neon "Open" sign seem a little too modern to you? Not not-picking, just an observation.

Excellent photos and set. I always thought it was just a set and was really in Hollywood.

On your trip did you ever find your ancestors? My wife is pretty heavy into genealogy. We used to go and take picture of tombstones on our vacations. People would sure give us some weird looks.

You are correct, the Andy Griffith Show was filmed on a set (the back 40) of Desilu Studios in Hollywood. That set which was used for so many old films and TV shows partially burned down and was eventually bulldozed. Nothing remains of the original set which is a shame. The folks in Mt. Airy took it upon themselves to keep parts of The Andy Griffith show alive by putting up these monuments and displays. And, no we didn't find much on our genealogy hunt. We had very limited information which really was our down fall. And yes, like you...I have travelled the nation in search of family graves. I've done well and have about 80% of my families graves photographed. The very old ancestors in North Carolina have been difficult due to poor data. One of these days I'll return to do more research. Thanks for stopping by tramsey...much obliged.

You pushed my button with these, James--I absolutely love them. I am a nostalgic old bugger & I love 'things' of old, whether they be buildings, cars, farm machinery, old documents, old vinyl records, etc.
Great shots & thanks for the interesting info.

I love to shoot under rainy skies and this set is a great example of why! These scenes are great but the light makes them beautiful. I think my favorite is Wally's Service Station, dramatic sky, wet street, an old Sinclair Station in the background, the Coke clock sign "Closed on Sunday", the rockers and Cheerwine bench under the porch. When it's got all that going for it, no wonder Wally's is still "OPEN" after all these years. Thanks for sharing these in download James. I really enjoyed viewing them.
