I have just received my new Nikon D7200 with 18/140 mm lens. I want to purchase photo editing software. Do not want a subscription. Leaning toward Corel3. Suggestions and or recommendations?

I tried Corel and did like it, but then I discovered Affinity Photo (Someone here on the Hog mentioned it.) and tried the free trial. Liked it so much that I bought it (About $50) It does everything that Photoshop does, sometimes better. It is more like PS than Corel. Easy to learn at a superficial level, but lots of depth if you want it. (For example, I had a great photo of the Tower of Pisa (The leaning tower) but with all kinds of tourists and touristic signs. It was pretty easy to get rid of the clutter. Much easier than with PS.
Like PS, it is layer-centric. Once you get used to that, it makes life much easier.

Another vote for Affinity Photo, from Serif. At $50 or less, it is very powerful, intuitively easy to use, and runs on both Macs and Windows PCs.

You will find that knowing what to do with your software is more important than which package you buy... same as with the camera.

I have Serif Photo Plus x7. Do you know what difference there is between it and Affinity? This is the first time that I have heard of Affinity?

Serif is an awesome little company based out of England.

PhotoPlus is their older photo editing software which they have discontinued recently.

It appears that what happened is they bought Affinity from someone else, and then they did some work so that it works on the PC as well as the Mac. Affinity is their current photo editing software offering.

I never owned PhotoPlus so I can't comment on the differences between it and Affinity (other than say I think it is probably very different).

I do own two other Serif packages and like them a lot!! Serif WebPlus (for creating web sites) and Serif PagePlus (for Desktop publishing).

My recommendation is if PhotoPlus meets your current needs I'd stick with it -- if you do decide to got to Affinity -- almost everything I've heard is good.

Thank you for this information. I've been using PP7 for a couple years and have only used a small part of it's possibilities. I bought PP8 months ago and am ready to download it on my new laptop. I was wondering if I wasted my money buying it. I will settle with it for now. I am pleased with the PP7 but it sounds like Affinity has much more.

Glad I could provide a bit of information. Even though I never owned it, Serif PhotoPlus is considered a very good and capable photo editing package -- and for the most part, it remember that it got really good reviews, especially around value.

You've just jogged my memory -- the only reason I didn't go with PhotoPlus several years ago is because it didn't support Adobe Photoshop brushes -- an odd requirement -- but one of the very specific features on my shopping list. For photo editing software in the end I went with Corel PaintShop Pro which does supports Adobe Photoshop brushes, i.e. "abr" files.

Still, I like Serif a lot, especially PagePlus -- I'm always surprised when so many people use fairly weak solutions for Desktop Publishing type projects, when there are some really good inexpensive solutions available like PagePlus -- and Serif's product support is excellent!!

Steep learning curve and not cheap, but if you plan to shoot RAW (and you definitely should) then NOTHING is better than Capture One.

Thank you for taking the time to update me. I need to learn more about how to use what I have, then decide if I should upgrade.

buy a used copy of photoshop elements on ebay. Great way to start... and someday when your ready for the full blown Photoshop
you'll already know lots of the tools.

Your suggestion might be valid, but the person already paid money and has a copy of a perfectly good photo processing package: Serif PhotoPlus.

Why buy something else if you already have a good solution.
