I am looking for a different lens to take photos of close ups of the rings/ flowers etc. I have a 50 MM 2.8 that is ok but seems like I should have something better?
I have a Nikon D7000 and D90 with other lens : 85 2.8, 70-200 2.8, as well as kit lens and wide angle lens 10-24. Seems like the last wedding I did I kept switching lens. Suggestions on a lens that would come closer to doing it all? I think it is the 24-70 that was suggested for wedding photography but wow, that one is pricey.
thanks for any help
Dianna
PS here are a few photos I took last week at the wedding. last with shoes I kind of like but feel like it could have been closer if I'd had a different lens

I wouldn't switch lenses on site. I would have 2 cameras with a nice lens for portraits, and then another equipped with a more general use lens (zoom), depending on the church (location) and how far away from the ceremony the photographer is going to be required to be.

well that's kind of what I did. My husband was my second shooter. He had the long lens, 70-200 from back of the church. I had the 50MM and the wide angle with me at the front of the church. Did not use flash at the wedding ceremony. Still just felt like no matter what lens I had on I was wishing I had the other one on. I know it is lack of experience too. This church was really not the best for photos as it did not have a balcony and only one side had windows so darker.

I think you probably did the best that can be expected. I've shot a few weddings over the years, but don't do it on a regular basis. The guys that do seem to have 2 cameras (one with 70-200mm) and another with a 24-70mm.
It might be that the photo(s) of the ring itself could be taken ahead of time (so you control the light), and you have the freedom to use whatever lens you have available and want to use, regardless of what is used during the ceremony.

One thing that I have done in the past, which gave me more of the better photos, is to show up at dress rehearsals. This allowed me to photograph during that time too, and get shots of everyone dressed up (except the bride in most cases). Plus, sometimes there was freedom to use flash, that I wouldn't have during the ceremony.

I was there for rehearsal as I was concerned about the lighting and was able to test it at that time. I did take photos of the rings before the actual wedding ceremony. It's not the light I"m concerned with it's getting close enough TO the rings themselves with the lens I have. I think the 24-70 is the next lens I'm going to get. Will just have to save for it. The problem I've got is right now I'm giving my youngest son all my photo shoot money for law school. He's in his 2nd year now.

i use a 24-70mm2.8 L and a 70-200mm2.8..........i use 2 camera bodies with these lenses attached. ...i have never wished i had another lens during the shoots. both cameras are hooked to an optech dual sling..so i can grab at either in a moments notice.

changing lenses at a wedding adds to the stress.

these 2 lenses capture everything i need.

(the 24-70 will give you a lot more possibilities than just the 50mm)

That optech is kinda cool. I have a friend that uses a similar harness. I'm glad there are more than one. The "man bra" seems a convenient way to carry two cameras, but weight-wise, how do you hold up after wearing this for 2 or 3 hours?

Is the one in the link the one you have?

i don't use the dual harness..i use the dual sling. much easier and non-restricting.

the 24-70mm2.8L is an awesome lens. it's my "almost never comes off my 7d" lens.

take your camera body to the local camera store and take some photos in-store with this lens....then go home and check them out. that way you do not impulse buy. it's a great lens.

Is it tied together in back, because it looks like it would just slowly work its way off the shoulders if not held in some way.

Your photos are excellent, any bride would be happy to have them. The rings on the shoes is a great idea. I use 2 cameras, one with the70-200mm, and one with the 24-70mm also. I also have a 100mm macro that I use for some detail shots, with a ringflash. Only takes a minute to switch it out on either camera, and with the rings in the flowers, it's a great shot. With the exception of putting on a wide angle or fisheye for a shot or two, the 70-200 and 24-70 pretty much do it all. And by the way, the 100mm macro is a great portrait lens too.
