Is this a good lens for indoor volleyball? What are the recommended set up & settings for this lens?

Most gyms have fairly poor lighting.

You will need to stick to wide open at 2.8. Try for a shutter speed of 500 or more.

If you're looking for individual shots, may have to get pretty close to the court.

There is a dedicated "sports" section here on forum that will help.

Not a bad choice, although a bit short and slow!

It's good, but short. Take a good look at the Sigma 50-100mm F1.8 Art lens, just what you need at less cost too.

A little short. The classic indoor sport lens is a 70-200 f2.8 or a faster prime in that range - maybe a 105 or 135 f2.

I looked through all 26 pages. A couple responses loved the 24-70. Could it be the 24-70 on a crop camera is longer & therefore a great indoor sports lens?

105 & 135 are good focal distances you say. On a dx crop camera 24-70 is 36-105. So would you still say its too short or am I confusing things?
Thank you for your reply.

Not sure how close you can get, but I have shot HS wrestling in indoor gyms extensively, right at the edge of the mat, so maybe no more than 30' worst case from the participants - I would assume volleyball would be similar or a bit farther.. I used a 70-200 f2.8 on both a 7D (crop) and 5D3 (FF), and never found it too long on either. The 105 on a Nikon crop is the approx equiv of a 157mm field of view and the 135 is just over 200mm, both substantially longer than the 24-70's 36-105 FOV.

I like my Tamron.

You will need to be very close to court to get individuals, probably too close, as you will be a distraction.

As others have mentioned, the 70-200 2.8 much better.

Depending on how close you'll be to the action, the lens may be fine, but you might like a 70-200 F2.8 better. If you are using a shutter speed shorter than 1/100 you will experience fluorescent flicker.

This is a problem with many older and not so old cameras, for which the only solution is to shoot a longer shutter speed so the shutter open time spans a complete 1/2 cycle (1/120) of the light's waveform, or use a camera with an anti flicker setting. Sadly I think the D5300's anti flicker is intended for video and live view shooting only.

with the lens you have either a high manual ISO or auto ISO - set the aperture for the DOF you want.
Or, set for shutter speed set a high ISO (maybe a 1000 or so) and the aperture wide open. Play with the aperture

The 70-200 is a much better choice. I recommend at least 1/2000 sec, set iso as high as you can to achieve this, also shoot either f4 or f5.6. Hope you spike your assignment.
