iPhone 6 Camera Question

My sister has an iPhone 6, and I am not familiar with it as I use a Samsung Android phone. From what I have read online, the iPhone 6 has an 8MP camera which should take pictures approximately 3264px x 2448px. Also, it does not appear that the resolution or picture size can be changed either when taking a picture from what I read. She recently sent me some photos she took which were only 640 x 480 and 119kb in size. When she emailed them using gmail, she was asked if she wanted to send them small, medium, large or actual size. She said she clicked actual, but when I got them they were only 119kb in size. Since she lives out of state and I can't see the file size of the photos as they are stored on her phone, I really don't know how big they are, and she is not sure how to check the file size herself. Also, me not being a iPhone user, I am not familiar with where they are stored on her phone to walk her through looking for them. She IS NOT texting them to me, which I know texting them will make a smaller file size, she is emailing them to me with gmail.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The OP was asking how big is the image from the IPhone 6. If it's 8MP then when emailed using actual size it should still be 8MP. The OP received the image only 640x480.

FWIW, the correct full specs are 3624 x 2448 according to http://lifeinlofi.com/more/iphone-photo-sizes-2007-2013. If the picture that was sent is not that size then it was reduced by the email program. The OP said his sister used gmail but did not specify what application on what device was used. I suspect she should configure her iPhone to use a gmail account but by using the Mail app on the phone. Just a suggestion. I know that on my 5 and now on my 6s I don't have a problem sending full size images via email.

If all else fails it might be better to upload them to GoogleDrive or to the sender's computer first and then emailed from there.

In a perfect world you might get 8 meg pics. On my 6 it seems to depend on relative light levels and the amount of certain colors but I've never had a problem sending actual sized pics using Yahoo mail.

Perhaps it is something on your end. I routinely talk and send pictures to another hogger whose email system has a cow if I try to attach anything over 10 megs. Check your side of the equation also.

Thanks for the reply.... She used gmail on her iPhone 6 to send the email. When she attached the photo, it asked her what size she wanted to send, small, medium, large, or actual. She clicked actual she said. The thing is, she sent me a photo from Cape Cod on the beach and the file size was 2.57MB and I was able to enlarge it quite a bit. She has sent other photos to me and said she sent them actual size, but when I got them they were small, only 119kb. My question regarding her phone is, can settings be changed for the size of the picture being taken? Is there a setting she has to set to take full size photos, and if so where? From what I was able to find online searching those questions is that the iPhone 6 takes full size pictures and you can't change the size of the image when you take it. I did not think that gmail changed the file size without asking and letting you choose the size you want to send.

I was thinking that it might have something to do with light, colors, scene, etc as outside images such as on the beach seem to come out fine, but indoor images seem to be the ones that are smaller. When I checked properties of the files she sent, it did not look as though she used flash on the indoor photos she sent this weekend. Could be the problem.

I don't think it is on my end, as I have not had the same problem with other people sending photos.

Thanks for the reply.

I don't think that is the case with the photos she took this weekend, as they were taken at a college graduation and she sent them to me after the graduation was over. She just emailed me the photos from her phone.

Thanks for the reply.

Whats not so clear here??? I asked why photos she is emailing me using gmail that she took with an iPhone 6 which has an 8MP camera are only coming thru as 119kb files when she is choosing to send them actual size from gmail. I also said I was not familiar with the iPhone 6 settings as I use an Android phone and was looking for some suggestions.

Thats correct BebuLamar, I wanted to know if the image size could have been changed, if she was possibly taking a smaller photo, and if so, where in settings would that be done as I am not familiar with an iPhone. From what I read online, it does not appear that way.

I don't claim to be anything like an expert on this one. I go to one of my sons when I can't figure out techie stuff of the phone but I can state for sure that file sizes on mine vary a great deal and that the only adjustment that is obvious is what you mentioned before. The only thing I can think of is that she may have inadvertently hit the small button rather than actual size.

We may never know.

I love Apple products but the way they handle things automatically sometimes can be frustrating. There is a difference in file size depending on how it is sent. I have noticed that sending by text, email or a post to Facebook will result in a different file size. The best way to share high quality photos is to use Apple's photo share feature through ICloud. This is easy to do from iPhone to iPhone but it can also be done from IPhone to Android; although,I have never tried that option.
