As I am new to DSLR, I was considering a "bridge" camera; however, a friend had a used Nikon V2 (14.4mp) he had offered me. This mirrorless attracted me, and the same person had a SL1Nikon 70-300mm "CX" lens to match up with the camera. Can any Hoggers offer me an opinion on their experience with this lens? My main interest is with wildlife photos, birding in particular. The D500 and 200-500mm. lens set-up is beyond my affordability.

Recommend that you check out thomas stirr's website. He makes excellent use of the Nikon 1 cameras.

I really like the lens. I made a tripod foot for it before they were available from Nikon. Here are photos and some of the setups that I use:

Jump on that offer! If you turn it down, have your friend contact me! Tom Stirr is the best source of Nikon One info. Check out http://tomstirrphotography.com. Check out his posts in the Bird Photography, Birds in Flight, and Equipment categories.

I have the Nikon J1. I use the Nikon FT-1 auto focus adapter and the Nikkor 55-300 AF-S VR zoom lens with it. With the CX crop factor of 2.7x it gives me an equivalent focal length of 810 mm. Total cost was $80 for the J1 on ebay, $225 for a new FT-1 adapter, about $250 for a used Niikor 55-300 zoom on ebay. I've got my best hand held small bird shots with this combo. It's also great for moon shots and flower closeups. The camera, adapter and lens are just 2.2 lbs. Pictured are the camera, adapter and lens with the lens zoomed out and zoomed in. Also shown is a small bird standing on a 1" diameter fence rail, at 50 ft.
