Pat - the lavender plants (stems, leaves and flowers) give off their wonderful scent when cut, bruised, or otherwise touched in some way.
But you really can't smell them just walking by...

thank you judy, they do such wonderful displays 5 times a year, that is why I take Pixel so he can have his photo shoot and he likes all the gardeners there
