I am having a strange problem. I shoot with a Canon 70d in both jpeg and Raw modes simultaneously. When I import the photos all of the photos are imported at 5348 X 2572, but after processing, when I go to export for printing the quality is going down to 1000 X 438. Any have any explanation? What am I doing wrong?

What settings are you using when you export them?

The size was 1000 X 1000 with a resolution 240 pixels/inch, exporting as JPEG at imgage quality 72%

It's doing what you asked for. Its scaling down the image proportionately. What do you actually want? its around about 4" by 2" roughly print size.

5348 X 2572 seems like a strange proportion to start with. The Canon 70D should have resolution of 5472 × 3648. Can you reset your Lightroom to original settings?

For my own photographs, I always print directly from Lightroom. However, I take photographs for a local symphony whenever they perform. I edit the photographs and then export them and provide the symphony jpegs on a thumb drive. I actually give them two sets - one set consists of photos around 1 Mb and another set is sized around 5 Mb. The way I get my desired file sizes is through the File Sizing are in the options menu that appears after you click the Export button. LR remembers the settings from the last export. I have suspicion that you tweaked the settings that affect the size of the export file and it produced a small, low resolution file and is continuing to do so. I would try unchecking the File Sizing checkbox and then see what the size of the exported photo is.

Why shoot both? Not necessaary. Understand how light room works and convert to whatever you want in LR.

I think you are right. After posting my question, I went back and checked my export settings and notice I was resizing. I don't know why I did that but I think that should resolve the problem or at least hope so. Is there an easy way to export photos from Lightroom directly to sites like MPIX?

There are several reasons to shoot both depending on your camera and need. Many cameras that have dual storage card slots allow you to send the RAW files to one card and the jpeg to the other which makes for a nice backup if your card with RAW files fails. Another reason is that some shooters need to transmit or share images right away after the shoot. This might be for review by a client, photojournalism situations, etc. This is much easier and faster with jpg files but you might then want the RAW files for editingredients the client picks.

I don't know if I'd call it easy but some sites have Lightroom export plugins. I don't really care for how Lightroom handles them. I don't think MPIX has one but Shootproof and Pixieset have them, Flickr does too. I prefer just exporting from Lightroom and uploading the images myself though.

Yes, BUT, it's not called export it's called Publish. Not sure whether MPIX has a publish addon but several do such as Flickr. Using the publish feature you can also track any comments made through LR without having to flip over to the hosting website.

I agree with PhotoPhreak - you need to check the settings in your export dialogue. As for printing, I also print directly from LR where I can make adjustments to the way they print without affecting the original image.

When I export from LR it is mostly to create .jpg images with a watermark for sharing on social media and email. Those go into their own folder separate from the rest of my images. If you are talking about sending images out for printing, that is another situation entirely. The photo lab where I send my images has certain parameters for the images so they will upload to their site. They let you know right away if the image is too large! For them I also have a separate folder for images exported with the correct settings.

I shoot in jpeg and raw for two reasons. One to have a backup image and the second I have been having a problem with some of the raw images becoming corrupted which I have traced to my sd cards. I use Sandisk's but for some reason there is an issue. I have switched to Sony which doesn't seem to have the problem but I have a lot of Sandisks and replacing a number of disks is a bit expensive. As to the printing issue I think I have resolved the situation as per all of your suggestions on this website. Thank you everyone for your help. As an old guy I am just not as technically proficient as I would like to be. Learning everyday.
