A walk around the block

I am still trying to figure out if I want to keep my new 105mm macro lens. I really like close-up photography, and my research tells me the Nikkor 105mm macro lens will deliver "tack sharp" images. My first impression was not favorable, but one of my UHH friend encouraged to give it a fair test. The following are some of the pics I found within about 500 feet of my house. If anyone cares to comment, a critical review would be helpful.

What don't you like about your lens? I think it delivers beautiful clarity and bokeh! Lovely images.
I agree with islandgal. Nice shots. I use a Sigma 105mm on my Canon and it's one of my favorites for portraits and close up's
Gary, I think this is an excellent series. The kitty is a charmer and highly detailed. All your flower shots have very good detail. It looks like you were dealing with strong light in serveral of the shots but they came out well. I particularly like the shot with white blossoms. The exposure is excellent.

Islandgal and Jackbrake - I am trying to achieve tack sharp image; something better than my Nikkor 18-140mm lens and/or my Coolpix P100. My first 100 to 200 exposures were not very impressive. At least for me, I discovered the Nikkor 105mm Macro lens requires a bit more effort. Most of the above pics were taken at full manual. For me it made a big difference when taking close-ups. Thanks you so much for your comments.

Hi Carol - Very good to here from you. I believe the close-ups above were taken at full manual in an effort to better all the variables. At least for me, I have not found the 105mm lens to be a point and soot lens. The lens and I are becoming good friends. Thank you for your comments. Gary K
I shoot a lot of macro and very rarely use auto focus and I am almost always on a tripod (I use a 180 Sigma lens). A lot of my focus is done on my led screen not through the lens. These photos look very sharp to me but as someone mentioned above not easy to handhold

Thank you for you comments, and confirming manual focus. The close-ups were all hand held and the wind was blowing. I agree a tripod and no wind will produce much better results.

The images look great to me and have been considering purchasing a macro lens!
Getting "tack sharp" doing hand held is problematic at best. I have a Tokina 100 macro for my D7000 and am perfectly happy with it and the price. Don't do much tripod work.

Hi qvarner - Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, but yap, I was out in the backyard taking pictures. I am becoming more comfortable with the 105mm macro lens, and getting much better results. It's not a point and shoot lens. I also ordered a focusing rail today so I can more effectively use a tripod.

Hi swamp-cork, I've discovered the Nikon 105mm macro lens is not a point and shoot lens. I am fairly confident the 105 and I will become good friends. I is just taking a bit longer it get comfortable.

Hi Just Ducky,
I am pleased you liked the little pics I took as I walked around the block. The purpose of the walk was simply to play with my new 105mm macro lens. The block I live on is made up of a bunch of really nice people from a school bus driver, auto mechanic, doctors and even a movie actor. I have to admit the life size bronze sculptor is a little odd, but I like photographing throughout the year.
