Shirley Valerie Horn (May 1, 1934 – October 20, 2005) was an American jazz singer and pianist.[1] She collaborated with many jazz greats including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Toots Thielemans, Ron Carter, Carmen McRae, Wynton Marsalis and others. She was most noted for her ability to accompany herself with nearly incomparable independence and ability on the piano while singing, something described by arranger Johnny Mandel as "like having two heads", and for her rich, lush voice, a smoky contralto, which was described by noted producer and arranger Quincy Jones as "like clothing, as she seduces you with her voice". Although she could swing as strongly as any straight-ahead jazz artist, Horn's reputation rode on her exquisite ballad work.

Thank you, she was truly wonderful. I remember being in a store that sold only Christmas ornaments and the were playing her CD, "Here's to Life." Everybody was enjoying it, obviously lingering to hear it and buying more stuff too. The owner came in with some French friends and changed the music, put on this French guy singing through his nose. All of us started complaining, some not too softly, until he put Shirley Horn back on.

The first time I heard "Here's To Life," I was on my way to a gig, and it came on the FM jazz station. I had to pull over to the side of the road to listen. It still destroys me. Fabulous Mandel arrangement. The word in LA spread fast, when the players all talked of what a fabulous session it was.

My wife and I were fortunate enough to hear her several times at the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel in LA before her health issues caught up with her. She was a very special person and performer. She refused to tour while raising her family, only performing in Washington DC clubs near her home, for which I admire her, but it also meant that wasn't as well known as she deserved. Her piano work was awesome, I wish she'd recorded more piano (but no less of her vocals!). The last time we saw her, she needed a bright red "rascal" cart to get on stage, but still performed beautifully. She is sorely missed.

I saw her here in NYC a few years back. If I remember right it may have been her ladt public performance. She had already lost a leg to diabetes. But it didnt stop her beautiful voice and magnificent piano playing. I wish I could remember exactly when and where this concert was. I do remember it being over by Lincoln Center.
A friend of our use to travel with Shirley when ahe was on the road.

Thanks for the memories. Unlike most vocalist/pianists her musicianship was equal to and possibly exceeded her vocalist abilities. The female Nat Cole who owned the ballad genre.
