Hi, how are all of you photographers going? My name is Gary and I'm just getting started in photography. My first question is, why is it that I get no photo when I use long exposure for longer than 5 seconds?( Just a silver looking photo) Please send me some tips. Thanks

Shutter speed is only one of the 3 factors necessary for a correct exposure. If you don't have the correct aperture and ISO settings in conjunction with a long shutter speed then you are overexposing the image. You really need to understand how they work together. Welcome to UHH. Many folks here reccomend the book "Understanding Exposure". I have looked at it but have not read it in it's entirety. You can find the same info online. I always reccomend this website: http://www.photographycourses.biz

Welcome GKR. Understanding Exposure (Walt above) can be checked out of the library. I had to have them get it from another library, but it was worth the wait.
Just call me cheap.

Another resource I've found to be useful is the Cambridge in Color series:

5 seconds is an extremely long shutter speed. People will sometimes use long shutter speeds when photographing waterfalls to get the smoothed out effect but they will have a neutral density filter on the lens to reduce the amount of light entering the camera. What were the other camera settings when you shot at 5 seconds? What mode was the camera in? The book "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson is a good one to get.

Gary, depending on several settings on your camera, you may be completely over exposing that particular image, thus the white, or, as you put it silver, appearance.

Good Morning,
How are you doing? My settings while using long exposure were, mode bulb, iso 100 and aperture 22. The timing was up to me. But, one thing that I didn't use was a ND filter. Now, that I have one I'm gong out to try it as soon as I can. Thank for your help.

what type of shooting are you doing, product studio work? Not enough info to make any comments. silver looking shot? what does that mean? If your whites are gray then you need to adjust your WB, but I'm sure its more your set up and camera settings. There is no such thing as one setting for every scene. Not sure why the shutter speed is so slow?
