Actually, I should have called them second year birds. In their first year, Eagles are all brown with an all black bill. In their second year, they gain a lot of white on their chest, head and tail and the base of the bill starts getting yellow. By their third year, their entire bill is yellow and more of the head and tail is white. Some eagles have a dark stripe through their eye that resembles an osprey. It will take 4 to 5 years for the eagle to attain the completely white head and tail and all brown body that we know as the mature Bald Eagle.
