My wife and I are planning to be Quebec City in mid-July. We have never been there and are looking forward to the trip. We hope to get some good photos while there. Which leads me to a couple of questions:

We are flying into Canada from the US. What is involved with customs in regards to the camera gear? Do we need to give them a list? Or, get prior authorization from Canadian Customs? There are two DSLRs and numerous lens, flashes, etc. that we would take. We are not pros, but... well, you know... we have lots of "stuff".

And, we are looking forward to the old part of town. Looks very scenic and lots of interesting architecture. Have any of you been there and have tips/recommendations for us? Would you have any hotels that you would recommend?

We are planning to use a taxi during our visit. Not sure we would want or need a car. Is that a safe bet? We will be there for a week.

Thanks!

There wont be any issues with your camera gear at the Canadian end.
The old city is fabulous to walk around. Many places to photograph, especially the Chateau Frontenac. Walk the promenade and visit the Plains of Abraham where General Wolf fought and defeated the French under Montcalm. (both of whom died because of the battle.)
You're unlikely to need a car while there. The old city is safe to walk around at all hours of the day or night, so be sure to get some night shots.

Thanks... That is what I was hoping to hear!

Even if you are not a very religious person but especially if you are, consider visiting St. Ann's cathedral. I thought it was really worth seeing. I've been there twice.

Sounds good... We enjoy visiting cathedrals. Amazing pieces of architecture and decorations, works of art, really. Thanks for the tip!

St. Ann's is a beautiful cathedral. Also stop off at Montmorency Falls Chute-Montmorency and we really enjoyed this place:

In fact my avatar picture was taken on Ile d'Orleans. Enjoy!

It's a great city for walking.
We stayed within the city walls.

We can't walk for long, or far. But, we plan on doing what we can. Hoping to find a hotel that we can afford within the city walls. We are both retired and need to watch our money closely, though.

Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre is NOT a cathedral; it's a basilica. The cathedral for the archdiocese of Quebec is Notre-Dame de Quebec.

It's important to have these things straight.

Try Le Hotel Priori. Great location and reasonable for the area. They do have only one small elevator, however, and no bellhop service when we were there.

His is a must! The feeling you will experience when you first enter and see the "crutches of the cured" is amazing. So many miracles here. From crutches to baby shoes! Bring tissues!

Thanks! Finding a hotel is our next challenge. Hope to get something within easy walking, or a short taxi ride, to the attractions. I'll look into the Le Hotel Priori.

We spent three nights there last October at the end of a New England cruise. It's a beautiful place! Hopefully you can walk, since there's so much to see right in the Old Town area and a car is impractical. Someone has already mentioned the Chateau Frontenac and the Plains of Abraham, both not to be missed. The Old Town has the feeling of a French town with the pubs and such with great charm. There's an incline from the promenade at the back of the Chateau Frontenac that takes you down to the river level and saves a lot of walking.

We stayed at the Marriott, just a short distance from the Old Town, very nice but without the charm of the local hotels. We rented a car for one day from a Hertz location just off the Rue Saint-Jean in Old Town and traveled to Montmorency Falls and then on to the Île d'Orléans for the day. In the fall, it was a beautiful trip.

We plan to go back. Enjoy your trip!
