If you don't have a good photo backpack you should pick one up, it can be used as a carry on, I have two med backpacks that I use when I fly, the last trip was a non-stop from NJ to Aruba.

The carry on restrictions were originally for flights FROM overseas to the US, not outbound. I don't believe Canada signed on the the prohibition and in any case, Canada is not considered overseas.
Hi. I flew from Toronto to Florida and back a couple of weeks ago, my backpack was full of my camera equipment, lenses, chargers, camera, lightning trigger and laptop and sundry cords of all shapes.
No issues at all, security didn't even ask, backpack through the X-ray scanner me through the metal detector pick up backpack and on my way.
My backpack is a Tamrac Evolution 8 and about the size of maximum carry on, perhaps a little bit smaller. I flew WestJet that only has a size restriction no weight restriction for carry on, mine weighed 25 lbs.
Took my rig (Nikon 7200) plus two lenses, including a larger 70-200, filters, chargers, etc to Hawaii in February. Have a good backpack-a Think Tank, which also contained a few personal items. No problems. Packed my monopod in my checked suitcase. Not international, but still subject to a fair amount of scrutiny. We also took a hopper while there, from Maui to Oahu. Same deal, no problem.

It may not be "overseas", but you have to follow all of the international regulations. You need a passport, or enhanced driver's license to gain reentry. Canada is still a foreign government. As to carryon rules, they are set by the airlines. If your carry on bags, fit in one plane's compartment, that is no assurance it will fit in another carrier"a storage.
There was a question from someone in the last day or 2 about how to get around the weight restriction on the last leg of his trip where the weight restrictions were lower then the other legs.
If you are on a direct flight, this will not be a problem. If not, check with each airline to see their restrictions.
I always have a camera with lens as carry-on (5D MIII), and I also have at least a couple of cameras and a bunch of lenses, etc. going in to the luggage, so far I never had any issues!
