Lightroom 5 vs. Lightroom 6

I have Lightroom 5 and have a chance to get Lightroom 6. Is there much difference between the two, to purchase LR 6? I don't want to pay $10 per month for the next 20 years.

yes, buy LR 6 and you will be set for a long time. When you install it, you will notice that they have an upgrade, so install that also. Smart move not to spend $10 a month. I use LR6 that I own

Thanks. That is what I am thinking. I just wanted to know if there was a big difference between the two

I upgraded from Lightroom 5 to 6 a few months ago as raw files for my new camera were not supported by 5.

I haven't noticed much difference although I believe there are a few new utilities I've yet to discover (I'm not a professional just the opinion of a keen amateur).

The alternate view here is that by doing the $10/month service, you will be assured of the latest versions (sometimes Adobe updates their CC version and not the stand-alone version). And when LR7 or 8 or whatever comes in (long before 20 years pass!) with the CC subscription you will just get that, as compared to having to spend another $100+ (if Adobe even offers the stand-alone version by then).

Just food for thought.

For my computer ... the difference was speed.

LR 5.7 fast ... LR 6 sluggish.

If you shoot RAW (and you should), sooner or later you'll probably buy a new camera that's not supported by LR6, but is supported by LR CC. Sure, you could convert those RAW files to PSD's, but that's a continuing time-consuming hassle. So, consider the purchase of LR6 to be a short-term savings, not a life-long savings.

I shoot in RAW with a Nikon D800. Does LR6 support RAW files with a Nikon D800?

Pay $120/yr - when you decide to stop, then stop. Eventually you will be making the same decision about whatever you end up with and the next version. There is no advantage to buying the perpetual license anymore, and the differences between it and the CC versions are going to increase. Besides, you get Photoshop in the deal, clearly the industry leader in photo processing software. I don't see any downside of paying for software that you use on a regular basis.

You never "own" software, all you own is the license to use it. Check it on any software publisher's website.

I agree Gene, but on the other hand I know a guy who has been using Lightroom 3.6 since it's inception along with a Nikon D7000. He has no interest in upgrading. He's very very frugal with him money and going on 6 years without a software purchase. It the shoe fits....wear it.

Well put.

Lightroom 5 and Elements 11 came free with with a new camera I bought four years ago. All my photographs are processed through Lightroom and I've used Elements twice. Lightroom 6 (required to support raw file processing from new camera) cost around £65 so by my calculations I'll be saving money on the CC subscription within six months.

Having said that, once my circumstances change and I have the time to learn and use Photoshop I'll be subscribing to Adobe CC (Lightroom & Photoshop) I just hope that doesn't happen within the next couple of months.

If you're considering buying LR6, don't hesitate. Adobe could discontinue it at any time. They have said that it's their last stand-alone LR.

If you have Lightroom CC, and decide to stop, can you continue to use it with no more upgrades? Or will it stop working completely?
