I already own an 80D but have an opportunity to buy a 5D Mark ll. Do I need to get the 5D $575.00, or is the 80D a better camera. Or should I just own both?

5D Mark ll is a full frame camera and you have a great introductionary price. Crop lens from you 80d will be a problem. This can get more expensive then you think. The 80d is a terrific camera with better video. The 5D Mark ll is still an excellent professional tool. If eyes are really open to expense keep both.

The funny thing is the lenses that I already have a really mainly for full frame cameras. I have a 70-200 2.8, a 17-70 2.8 and a 24-105f4.

If you are going to shoot action the 5d Mk2 is not the way to go. It is only 4.6 FPS and an outdated AF system. The 80D has faster more accurate AF and is 7 FPS. The 80D has much more dynamic range and is only slightly behind on low light capability. I don't see much advantage to going this way. If you want full frame, step up to something that is better than what you already have.

80D should be all you need for that.

Landscapes and portraits may be better on the 5D because of the sensor, but in other respects the 80D is a more advanced camera. Can you take a few photos with it to see is you prefer the results? It should be pretty obvious. If it's not, there's no reason to get it.

While the 5DII is still a good camera, especially at that price, I personally think that in the long run you will be happier if you save up a bit more and get a used 6D. For the type of shooting you say you do, the 6D would definitely be the better choice, especially under low light conditions, such as weddings, etc.

Why not rent 5d 2c if u like it. If u do,keep 80d for back up.I own an 80d and am happy as a pig in poop with it,and the added expense of lenses could not afford full frame. My backup rebel t6i and still have a 50d.I would never trade or sell my 80d. Think of what u photograph most, and under what weather conditions if outdoors.

How much landscape and people pictures do you do ?? - That is what the FF does best - and do you have lenses??

I have had the 5D, 5D II, and 5DIII and think they are all terrific cameras. I still have my 5D II as a backup for the 5D III and mostly shoot non action subjects with it. For action targets I have a 7D II. I've not owned any of the models in the 80D space so I cannot comment on them.

FYI: The only 17-70mm lens I know of is Sigma's f/2.8-4 "DC", which is a crop-only lens. Will fit, but would heavily vignette on 5DII. Might also interfere with (i.e. possibly damage) the FF camera's larger mirror.

EF 24-105mm and EF 70-200mm would both work fine.

All that said, the 80D has a much more advanced and higher performance autofocus system. The 5DII (2008) basically inherited the original 5D (2005) AF system with few, if any changes... unfortunately. Both cameras' 9-point AF (with 6 hidden "Assist" points closely clustered around the center point, but only usable in AI Servo mode) is f/5.6 limited and rated to about -1EV...

In contrast, the 45-point AF in 80D is f/8 capable at up to 27 of its AF points and is rated to about -3EV. (In 2012, 5D Mark III finally got a much improved 61-point AF system, much like that used in 1DX series... which is also used in 5DS models and has been further tweaked and improved in 5D Mark IV.)

80D is 24MP. 5DII is 21MP. 80D can shoot continuously at 7 frames per second. 5DII can almost shoot at 4 FPS.

5DII is good to about ISO 6400... or maybe 12800. I suspect 80D can do those ISOs at least as well. I know my 7D Mark IIs can do ISO 16000 at least as well as the 5DII does ISO 12800... and the 80D is newer and higher resolution model than 7DII.

5DII also is a fairly noisy camera. I do a lot of equestrian photography and have to be very careful using my 5DII around horses. It's loud shutter has caused more than one horse to "go vertical". I haven't had that problem with any of the APS-C cameras I've used. The 5DII also has a 1/200 flash sync, like most Canon full frame (1/160 or 1/125 with some studio strobes). The 80D has a slightly faster 1/250 sync (I haven't used one with studio strobes, but other APS-C I have done so have synced at 1/200).

80D control layout is more comparable to 6D. The 5DII control layout is more comparable to 50D/7D. In fact, 5DII and 7D are nearly identical in size and weight.

As a 5DII owner and user... I have to say I don't see much reason for an 80D user to buy one.

IMO, you'd be better served picking up a new lens... maybe a Canon EF-S 10-22mm, if you have use for a truly wide lens. I also might consider replacing that 24-105mm with the 24-70mm f/4L IS USM. Or, depending upon which 70-200/2.8 you have, upgrading that.

But, shooting weddings you really should have a second camera... and there's no arguing that a full frame like 5DII can be great for portraiture (but you don't have any larger aperture prime lenses that can truly take advantage of that). If it were me, I'd look for a second 80D as backup (easier to switch back and forth) and forget about full frame for now. Maybe some day if your work justifies it, upgrade to a pair of full frame and some other lenses.
