It is that time of the year when wild flowers in Coeur d Alene, Idaho are popping all over. Every year I try to capture some good close-ups. It is especially rewarding to find a rare flower known as a Calypso Orchid or Fair Slipper. In downtown Coeur d Alene there is 165 acre natural area called Tubbs Hill with 2.4 a hiking trail around the hill. If you know where to look, there are several tiny pockets where Calypsos can be found for several weeks.
Yesterday I took some photos with my Nikon 105mm macro lens. I was not impressed with the results, so I tried again today with my Nikon 18-140mm lens. I am somewhat pleased with the attached photos. Yes Carol, your photo posted today gave me the inspiration.
Gary, these are dandy shots and both are flowers I haven't seen before! Nice work. Your comment absolutely made my day! I love that lens. It lets you focus quite close for good flower close ups and I have always found it to be sharp! I have the 105 also and it is an excellent lens but I find myself picking up the 18-140 because it is light and I like having the flexibility of the zoom.
Those photos are very pleasing to one's eyes. I'm shocked though, that you did so great with a Nikon18-140mm lens. The Nikon 105mm macro is one lens of distinction among macro photographers. What can I say but wow!

Carol, thank you for the kind words, but to me the flowers still are not as sharp as I believe they should be. I love close up photography. I bought the Nikon 105mm macro lens several months ago to achieve tack sharp images, however everything seems to comes out a bit soft. I plan to get some of the shots printed in 8x10 to better evaluate the capability.

mas24, I am truly pleased that you liked the flower photos. I love macro photography, but I am getting a little old to be crawling around on the ground trying to get the good shot. Now I just need to figure out what is going on with my new 105mm lens.

Gary, since you didn't include downloadable files it is hard to gauge the sharpness. It could be settings or processing. I've had my 105 for several years and always liked the quality it produced, just not the weight.
Beautiful, Gary! Well done!

sailorsmom,
Thank you very much for the positive comment. I really enjoy closeup photography, which is great for me because I provide full time care for my wife. Most of my photos are taken close to home, however I could not resist taking a little more time to get some wild flowers that are only available for a short time in the spring. I am very critical of the photos I take, so I don't post very many pictures. I just had to share the Calypsos Orchids because they are only found in a few small locations, at least that I know of.

I am very pleased that you liked my little wild flowers. I really enjoy being out in woods all alone with my camera, although it's nice when my wife is able to come with me.
