Canon G3 x

Hi. I have recently gotten really interested in photography. Have utilized the iPhone 6 camera as well as an inexpensive canon point and shoot camera. I recently bought a canon G3 X and I wonder if if I made a mistake by not buying a DSLR camera.

I like taking photos of historical places such as FDR's home in Hyde Park NY or the Newport mansions. I also like taking photos of boats, the ocean, eagles etc. I don't take photos every day. In fact, weeks could go by where I don't use the camera at all.

So, did I make a mistake purchasing the canon G3 X? I can afford to buy a decent DSLR but I don't want to spend a lot of money on lenses, etc.

Thoughts, comments.

If spending a "lot of money" on lenses is of concern, then you probably don't want to get into a DSLR. Learn photography, and your current camera, well. In time you will know if you want to move into a DSLR or not! Enjoy your new camera in good health!

No didn't you make a mistake with buying the Canon it's a great camera with an excellent lens and a very good zoom, it is also far easier to carry around compared with a DSLR.

G3, Looked it up: "1.0-inch, 20.2 Megapixel* High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor, plus the power to zoom to an incredible 25x" Hay, that is a great specification list!! Why burden your self with 40# of DSLR and $1000s invested. There is a filter adapter available for these cameras. I have one for my G-2 which I DIY converted to IR.
Amazon: Lens Filter Adapter Tube for Canon Powershot G3 Camera $10 52mm

In any purchase, start of the output and work toward the equipment needed. If all you do is print 8x10 and display on a 50" HDTV your needs are camera specifications are described by the end use. If you print big, then the specs go up. That G3 specifications list 1" sensor, 25x and 20 meg coupled with any filter you want [or even a 2x lens] gives you all the power that most DSLR owners really need.

I got my G3 X when I broke my hand and couldn't heft mu DSLR. My hand is fine now but my G3 X is still my go to camera for hiking (light weight) parades etc (smal) and wildlife (long zoom). If I had to go back to one camera I'd have a difficult time choosing. Be sure to get the lens hood/filter holder and the electronic viewfinder. Oh, and a spare battery. Enjoy!

The pictures are fine. I print them at 12x18 inches (as large as my printer will go) with no problem. But I'm old and the feel of the DSLR is comfortable to me. Really, the only noticeable difference is that in some circumstances the DSLR is quicker to focus, unless it's in live view, in which case it's about the same.

Ok, it may not be the best analogy, but wanting to put money into the body, but not into lenses is like buying a race car and putting street tires on it instead of race tires. If you do go the dslr route, maybe spend less on the body and invest more of your $$$ in lenses. All the latest model camera bodies are capable of excellent results today. A good lens will get the best out of the body it is attached to.
