I recall chatting with another photographer years back who recommended I specialize in a specific photography niche. His rationale was if clients suspect that you'™ll shoot anything, you might appear desperate to them - they are looking for a photographer who feels as passionate about their subject matter as they do. I assume most professional photographers started out shooting everything - being a photography generalists is how I learned to understand image composition. However, over time I did narrow my scope.

I do understand where my colleague was coming from, and I currently focus my business on service/social events, studio portraits and wedding photography. However, I recall my Dad sharing some good advice before leaving for college. Dad said, while it is OK to study hard and excel in your chosen major, don't lose sight of gaining general knowledge of other subject matter as you grow. I fully understand the gist of my father's advice today - it would have been hard for me to socialize with folks on campus if my only topics for discussion was computer science, mathematics and engineering. That being said, beyond the photography I 'focus' on for business today, I continue to dabble in marketable landscape/urbanscape photography as well. Just wanted to share a few images of various works I have created over the years.

Keep creating and good luck!

Greg

This is an enjoyable set Greg. You do good work and you have been here even longer than I and yet I'm seeing your work for the first time....UHH has grown a lot during our time!

Hi dhelix33,
Keep doing what you're doing. Excellent work, both the portraits and the landscapes.
The color is fantastic on both.

Excellent results.

About creating a niche - I remember a SNL skit from years ago about a guy who opened a Scotch Tape store. He sold only one size and type of tape. Yes, it was funnier than it sounds.

Great picture of City Scape. I agree about Nikon FF sensors. If you are adept at PS, there are great tutorials at KelbyOne on using alternate methods to achieve B&W.

A very nice set. BTW, I couldn't agree more with your father. Not just for ease of conversation, but to make yourself a well-rounded person. Eventually you find knowledge from one area can apply to something completely different. It's amazing how it all comes together. It will come in very handy. There is some quote about the breadth of your education being more important than the depth -- don't remember who said it. I think you have the right idea. Specialize if you need to, but shoot anything and everything. It will serve you well and keep your mind open and the ideas flowing. Thanks for sharing your work.

You might major in one area, but a knowledge of photography techniques can always make you more confident in your craft. You certainly learned how to do this very well. Glad you learned from your dad. He did give you great advice.
