This is a fort where they built munitions what sort I am not to sure but about a year or so ago they went in and cleared out the old bunkers of all or at least they think most of the the ammo. In the most recent past the fort had a person who was a care taker of the property and I had heard that he would turn people away at the front gate, not allowing them to pass into the fort. I have taken Photos of a lot of different ghost towns but I have to say that there seems to be a presents of something other worldly, Kind of like looking at pictures taken back during the Second World War the concentration camps with there rows of barracks and the stark pictures of the Smoke Stacks reaching up to the heavens and my wife and I were taking about what we felt yesterday and came to the same conclusions there is a presents. The smell that is still in the air is that of cordite that smell of spent ammunition so any way here are pictures of Fort Igloo out side of Edgemont SD.

Here is a sign greeting you at the front gate, I wonder how long ago this was I did not get out to ask questions and in that passed a few headed out of the fort but I didn't have any problems, Maybe I will go back when I have bought a new camera. I think all I have to say is that if you enter a place like this is to take pictures only and leave only your tire tracks that way they may over look the trespass.

We had barracks like those at fort gordon georgia. Had duty at night to keep fire going in heater. Only paint holding them together, they said they would burn to ground in 10 minutes. This was in 1967.

For you folks who have a bit of moss growing on your backs here are pictures of the old Ft Igloo out side of Edgemont SD. I am sure that seeing how Veterans Day is on the 11th these may spark a few fires.

These pictures do give me a little shudder. I lived there with my mother and father when I was 5 - 6. (1952-53) My dad worked there, but I never did know what he did. I do remember it was a very stressful time. I only remember a few incidences of that time of my life, but I have a clear memory that it was not a happy place for the adults that lived there. I remember there was a small community outside Igloo with a country store we would go to often, to visit with people off base. It was called Provo. From there we moved to Edgemont and my dad said he hoped he never had to lay eyes on Igloo again. I happened on your pictures by accident and wanted to say thanks for posting.

The town called Provo is still there thou not in the shape that it was when the base was active ... I along with several other drivers spent a week or two hauling crushed cars out of the Junk yard in the town. I am not sure if they had a store but they had a lot of empty buildings. Several of the buildings are lived in but it seems it is now just a siding for the train along with Edgemont. If there are any places that you would like pictures of I can take them next time my wife and I get in to the area. Thanks for the story I was stationed on a now defunk base in upstate Maine maybe in the future I will get to walk the old stomping grounds of Loring AFB.

Thank you for the reply, and the info about Provo. If I ever get a chance to get back there I will certainly visit Provo & Igloo. If you are ever there and have the time, I would most appreciate seeing pictures of Edgemont, and especially at the park. My brother and I as youngsters spent so much time fishing in the park lake. Our favorite spot was just to the right of the bridge going to the island, there was/is a tree that we used to climb out over the water to get to the best fishing. We sometimes talk about those days wondering if that tree still exists, and ... if the couple of poles we dropped in the lake are still on the bottom. Just silly, but nice memories. I hope you get the opportunity to walk again on Loring AFB and remember that other time in your life. It is somewhat mystical visiting places where you spent time, but now are so lonesome, and abandon. Thanks again.

If you are interested in what I have for pictures of Igloo I think there are about 100 or so give or take a few I will put them together and send you all that I have all yiou have to do is give me your E-Mail address. Give me a few days my wife was saying that we have a picture taking trip to Edgemont so we will take a few of the fishing Pond or Lake and the tree to the right side of the bridge as you go over to the island. My wife and I are Bone Chasers in a strange way being retired myself and we do pictures of grave yard headstones so we put on quite a few miles doing this for people who live out of the area. The name of this group is Findagrave.com it is strictly volunteer but if you have a few minutes it is really a worth while organization.

I heard Igloo was producing anthrax. Producing developing germ warfare. When I was there, it was spooky. Many people bought the houses and moved them out. The 2 story ones were hard to move so they remained.
Plutonium was there and trucks were buried full of it.
Those bunkers were huge on the inside.
Rumors went A few years ago, the government went in and removed all buried trucks and other remaining items of interest.
This was shortly after it was used as a fly ash dump but the state of South Dakota. Later thousands of vegetables were grown there as the ground never had pesticides, they were amazingly sweet.
It's hard to imagine thousands of carpenters being brought in in huge late 30 and early forties to build the place. I've seen many pictures of the men by THE train loads being brought in. Amazing place.
