Hi all. I promise that this will be the last plant puzzler from me for awhile. Again, California last week at my sister's house. What is this thing called, please? Thanks for looking, Fred

I agree. A popular name is "Mother-in-Law's Tongue". Make of that what you will.

Agree, is Aloe Vera. Is also a medicinal plant used among other things for sunburn.

I'll bet those little barbs really hurt sunburned skin.
Thanks for the ID.

Best, Fred

Thank you all for your help with my ignorance. I still would not scrape a sunburn with that plant.
Best to all, Fred

I would not do it either but if you use the slimy inner of the plant for sunburn, you will be so grateful to mother nature for giving you such a relief....:)

It could be an Aloe Vera, however the spacing of the teeth, the shape of the leaves, the orientation of the leaves, plus I do not see the spots on the leaves that younger Aloe Vera leaves sport, suggest a different type of Aloe. Looks to me more like 'Aloe massawana'. Of course it could be 'aloe brevifolia var. depressa', Aloe forbesii , Aloe juvenna, Aloe zanzibarica, Aloe forbesii or...
Hope this helps. Sorry I could not be exact. Plants are quite often difficult to identify with just a single photo of the leaves/plant/flowers.
