My lovely 23 yr old daughter has developed a love for travel as well as a talent for photography well beyond my abilities, and I'm a bit jealous.
Her equipment is becoming more sophisticated and correspondingly expensive as well.
Combine that with my love of practical jokes (at her expense), I've developed a intricate & devious plan to absolutely devastate her and then gleefully surprise her at the same time. Please tell me what you think.

We have plans in place to go back to beautiful Iceland this summer for 2 weeks mainly to explore the various waterfalls and mountain peaks, photographing them in detail as we go.

Her birthday will fall during this time, and I plan on upgrading her equipment to a Nikon D810 as a surprise. Of course I will have brought it along, bragging that it is 'MY' new camera.

Now for the practical joke:

I plan to "borrow " her current Nikon D7200 body with the intent of photographing her, as we stand in a precarious position above a cliff , a waterfall or other similar location.

As she stands watching, I'll make a point to change out a lens on what she assumes is the current D7200, fumbling to the point were she sees me 'accidently' drop her camera body perhaps hundreds of feet down to the ground or into the water. I will of course have changed out the D7200 body with an old non-working D40 i just picked up off of EBay for a few bucks -having safely ensconced the D7200 in my bag.

Oh, the look of sheer horror i expect to see on that beautiful face.

Of course being the dutiful dad I am, I will immediately offer up 'my' brand new D810 and the corresponding lenses as a sacrifice for her loss ( which was really for her anyway). I'm just wondering at what point should I hand back the original D7200 and try not to laugh so hard?

Boy, oh boy, you're going in all the way! It's kind of hard to comment (even though I like it), but you are the one that knows your daughter and know how far you can go, as far as the surprises, hey they are just absolutely awesome and could not be any better!!!!!!!!

Medic,

I see that those who consider your practical joke a bad thing don't consider putting their disapproval of you in rather harsh words bad, but I also think that your act of posting this may demonstrate that you aren't sure if it's such a hot idea. I don't think we are equipped to answer that question without knowing your daughter. Does she enjoy the occasional practical joke, or will she burst into tears or have a screaming fit? You know her better than any of us, it's your decision to make.

So much FUN to see the "sheer horror on her face" ?
That about says it all.
Sorry, no approval from me but I don't think it will matter to you.

Actually.......what you are doing is a violation of law: Tossing the old camera body off of a cliff....is littering....and adds junk to the environment. Littering in some areas carries big fines...and in some cases jail time. I am a retired regional law enforcement officer.....and I would be very happy to arrest you....but of course....I am retired. It would be my suggestion that you consider....another way to prank your daughter!!!!!

I would get so frustrated trying to figure out a new camera in the middle of a trip. I'm sure your choice of camera for her was because she said she'd like to have that particular one. I'm sure you'd like the way her faced looked much better after opening her gift early than see horror on her face from thinking her camera was gone forever. Please let us know what you decide to do.

I find it curious that the very people who think what you are proposing is mean and nasty have no reservations to harrasing you with mean and nasty over the top comments and name calling. It's clearly obvious who the school bullies were. Many of you need to look in the mirror.

Under most circumstances I would agree with you. Only he knows how his daughter would take his prank. My thought is that it is the waste of a wonderful opportunity for his daughter to take once-in-a-lifetime photos with a camera she has mastered, or at least tamed. I personally think the whole thing is a stupid and cruel stunt, but the most cruel part is dumping a brand new camera on her in the middle of a trip. Come to think of it, it won't be new because he is going to "pretend" the D810 is his for the first part of the trip. So, in one sense, he is going to give her his old camera rather than a new one.

When you are fumbling around up there on the cliff make sure you don't accidently drop the D810 over the side!!!

Why don't you just give her the camera either before or after the trip. Tell her how much you love and appreciate what a great young lady she is. That way she is not horrified at what just happened to her camera. She does not have to learn a new camera during the trip that way either. I think in the long run that would be the way to do it.
